Really sad, depressing, horribly awful (as in the feeling, not that the song is awful...) songs you can think of? I'm not feeling particularily depressed right now, I just thought it would be interesting. Although without their catharsis at times I don't know where I'd be, I'm sure many here feel the same.
The obvious is various by xiu xiu, bright eyes and elliott smith...

the most obvious: "gloomy sunday" - billie holiday ... it's often referred to as the most depressing song ever written, and it's absolutely beautiful also, "R.I.P." - bikini kill "last kiss" - that country song that pearl jam covered and a lot of joy division... but i don't actually find any of these songs depressing... the very fact that the artist chose to record them makes it somehow not depressing, if that makes any sense... knowing others have been in similar emotional states and have had the ability to voice those feelings in such concise ways is more inspiring than it is depressing what actually depresses me is most pop music

sinead o'connor - nothing compares 2 u Ever heard the Me First and the Gimme Gimme's cover of this? I'd favor "Rock and Roll Suicide" by David Bowie, and probably a handful of Xiu Xiu songs (Knife Play mostly).

i think i might have odd choices.
at the drive-in - 'ebroglio' xiu xiu - 'suha' marcy playground - 'opium' nirvana - 'where did you sleep last night (cover, leadbelly)' bright eyes - 'its cool, we can still be friends' OR 'saturday as usual'

Ever heard the Me First and the Gimme Gimme's cover of this? yeah. i HATE it. The whole album was pretty much their worst. Their best was definetly "Are a Drag". Anyone mention Linkin Park? Someone uses the words "only they understand my pain" needs to be stripped of their 20 dollar shirt. Thats just my opinion. Good music, just not overly depressing.
