the most obvious: "gloomy sunday" - billie holiday ... it's often referred to as the most depressing song ever written, and it's absolutely beautiful( that song was written before billie holiday, chief.

I kinda skimmed over the thread, but has anyone mentioned JYPU's cover of Cat Power's "King Rides By"? I prefer the JYPU version :x
also... Marcy Playground - One More Suicide. Iron & Wine - Sodom, South Georgia. Ida - Poor Dumb Bird. Mountain Goats - Dinu Lipatti's Bones. Johnny Cash - Hurt (the NIN cover). Kimya Dawson - Moving On. Sinaloa - Hello to Goodnight. the Martinis - Free (it's the song playing in 'Empire Records' when Deb shaves her head in the bathroom). Our Lady Peace - 4am and Clumsy(I cried when listening to that album a lot in Jr High). Smashing Pumpkins - Annie-Dog, Spaceboy, Tonite Repirse, Glynis, and Stumbleine. Sonic Youth - Tunic/Karen Koltrane/Karen Revisited, Cinderella's Big Score,

i thought that johnny cash cover was decent, but not nearly as sad as the original. especially with the conditions under which it was recorded.
yeah, i prefer the jim yoshii pile-up version of king rides by also
no use for a name - for fiona it doesn't really seem sad at first though. to most people anyway.

Hmmmmm..... so many to choose from.... someone said "Mother" from Pink Floyd, then again, the entire album itself is rather damn depressing.
I'd say most Julie Doiron songs would fit the bill, mostly because of the way these were recorded, really quiet and lo-fi, mostly w. her on the guitar and singing, esp. on the broken girl and loneliest in the morning cds.
Funny how some ppl said the word 'reclusive' and it just lit up this lightbulb in my head..... Anyone familiar w. Syd Barrett??? His solo work is really amazing, but of all of them, dark globe is my most depressive song I know....
btw, I really dig the swans, but i always found that they were trying too hard to push the boundaries, as with children of god, etc...
