the most obvious: "gloomy sunday" - billie holiday ... it's often referred to as the most depressing song ever written, and it's absolutely beautiful and a lot of joy division... as for gloomy sunday, I never got this, it was all a dream..so not half as depressing as "strange fruit"--that is some depressing subject matter right there. and stormy weather is much more bleak than gloomy sunday, but thats me. joy division I dont get either, its more like comfortable solitude rather than depression. ok, and "start breaking my heart" by manitoba is depressing to me, because it sounds like the soundtrack to driving past your childhood neighborhood, and seeing how much everything is changed, and knowing things will never be the same. never actually happened to me, but i still get that image everytime I listen to that album

neutral milk hotel - 'two headed boy pt 2' first time I read that, I swore I saw "two headed cat" by the aquabats and I freaked. It wasn't too depressing to me. Bohemian Rhapsody is a good one in my point of veiw, for Queen rocks it out ballad style and "nothing really matters" is pure depression if I've heard it.

I used to think various songs on Moon Pix by Cat Power and most of Exile in Guyville by Liz Phair. A lot of early Songs Ohia= depressing. Jude-Battered Broken, I Do,and I Know from No One Is Really Beautiful The rest of the list is just sad but makes me happy. Jim Yoshi Pile-Up-Breakdown Championship a few songs from Hefner's-Breaking God's Heart or anything of theirs outside of We Love the City Old 97s- Bel Air, Valentine, Jagged and Lonely Holiday Get Up Kids-Valentine Jonathan Richman's I Can't Find My Best Friend Vic Chesnutt's Stay Inside Sean Na-Na's-Princess and the Pony Jill Sobule's Rock Me To Sleep, Strawberry Gloss, Guy Who Doesn't Get It Joni Mitchell's River, The last time I saw Richard And the Wowz-Do You Remember, Maybe Someone, and Hand Me Down Heart local band from new york city-my favorite. check them out at www.thewowz.com. and www.myspace.com/thewowzHerman Dune-Good For No One from Not On Top EP, and Only the Shadow of Myself okay that's all i can think of now. for some reason compiling them makes them feel not as sad... hmmm.

cats powers whole "moon pix" album makes me so sad. and then on the casiotone alphabet series versions of roberta c, when he says "true love is hard to find" i always feel like i might cry a little.
