I have the same problem with this album as I do every other Owen album: It ends too soon. Owen. Please make a 3+ hr album next? Thanks!
But seriously - this thing is beautiful. I'll listen more before I put my thoughts into words, but there's nary a weak track on here.

So guess what just leaked? I've been wondering, with the progression of technology and how easy it is for albums to get leaked, whether or not we might see the end of certain music industry conventions, such as the 'album'. I know Purity Ring basically released all of their songs one by one on the internet as they were completed, before finally releasing 'Shrines'. You'd expect people would loose interest in getting the album once they've already heard most of it, but it didn't seem to hurt them. The whole premise of music albums began because of the way recorded music was distributed. You could only fit so many songs on a vinyl record, so you just had to record enough songs to fill one and then you could package and sell it. When we moved on to CDs, the premise was the same, even though they were a lot cheaper to make, people had grown used to this idea of a song cycle having a beginning and end within a reasonable time frame. Nowadays, with the internet, anyone can make their own 'album' from their favourite songs, regardless of the order they were 'meant' to be played. Even with 'In Conflict', there are 3 different versions of the same album available, with different track listings, and Owen P. has admitted that no one version is the 'proper' way to enjoy the record. I'd be curious to see bands start to embrace new untraditional ways of releasing music. That way, instead of annoying hindrances such as leaks, the accessibility of the internet can actually work to their advantage in a way that CDs and Vinyl can't.

This album feels so familiar in a lot of nice ways. I totally understand why there's no set track order that is best. Love Chorale a lot..but The Passions gives me tingles... beautiful song. Those were the only songs I not heard in some form before.. the trilogy in between ---> are like friends and glad they have the same energy as the live show. It was amusing that the kids were listening to it before I could admit to having it as well. I've worked out that we'll have at least 6 purchased copies in the house in a few weeks time, so I've decided to forgive them for a small indiscretion with my bandwidth. Looking forward to the black plastic with the hole in the middle edition... deluxe.

Decided to get rid of the album on all my devices. I'm terrified that I'll burn out of the songs. It's all I can listen to, and I just keep it on repeat! Gonna wait till the vinyl comes

Hey there everyone (and Owen!). Several year occasional lurker here. Felt the need to speak up. No notable/intelligent/technical observations to add, just an emotional reaction I suppose. So, I brought the new album home from the Toronto show Saturday night. Going into the show, I was pretty excited about the new material, having heard just a few of the new songs live back in Hamilton at Supercrawl, (and also of course the two vids that were already released). But then...The Passions happened. Kinda stood there trying to grasp what I was hearing. So different than anything I had heard before from him. So direct and personal...It was aiming straight for the heart/gut that night. "Compassion, compassion..." Held it together until E is for Estranged and that was it, I was a mess. This was my 7th or 8th Owen show and I've never been moved quite to this extent before. Have had about 8 to 10 listens so far of the album and it's worming its way in deeper and deeper. "I am Not Afraid" is pretty much destroying me now after 3 or 4 listens. Like I haven't cried from a new album in over ten years. Well done, Owen. lol Anyway..I'm just honestly fucking floored how different HPC, Heartland and IC are, and how I never thought each album at the time could ever be topped but..it's happening. Again. Ok I'm done blubbering about it. Thanks for reading...or skimming...or whatever..

Ok I'm done blubbering about it. Thanks for reading...or skimming...or whatever.. For real, the lyrics in I Am Not Afraid are like a punch in the gut they're so cleverly written, and with the instrumentation it's an extremely emotional experience. The tension in The Sky Behind The Flag and The Riverbed is so, so satisfying. I've also had to set aside the record for now, as incredible as it is I have to take it in slowly, there's so much to digest and I want to take my time with it. Owen, you are setting the bar so high for us little musicians, it feels like a huge privilege to be able to listen to such well crafted body of work, the wait was well worth it. It's all so overwhelming and humbling!

So I guess listening to it on repeat all day at "the office" is a terrible approach. Haha. It's ok, I put the headphones on when I get home and that hasn't ruined it for me yet. Far from ODing so far. Pretty much switching back and forth between I Am Not Afraid, The Passions and The Sky Behind the Flag with the occasional punch of The Riverbed thrown in. During the day I pretty much just let the album fly front to back. Oh, I'm also getting stuck on the live versions of Song for Five & Six. Loved the mid-song "coffee break" on the Q with Jian Gomeshi lol...cheeky little bugger.

Yeah it's funny, I deleted the album of my phone and computers as I would scared burnout was soon approaching with the volume I was listening to the record (mind you, it was just a precaution, there was not a pinch of ODing occuring). That lasted for about two days and I said to myself as I woke up this morning "I can't fucking do this", and put the album back on all my devices. The songs actually seem to get better the more I listen to them, despite me knowing them pretty well from when they've been performed live for the past couple of years. So I guess we shouldn't be worried. Heartland was cycling about two-three times a day for about six months straight at one point and it never got old...

Not even slightly over played the album to death yet. I did try and listen to something else yesterday and just gave up (Sorry Arcade Fire) and put it back on full repeat mode. My journey to work is just too short to fit in the whole album and I find myself wanting to get the later tracks, but then the next one comes on a I have to listen to it. I now just set the damn thing to random and be done or start in the middle, but I just can.. I have to play the thing from start to finish in that order (or else..).
I'm very biased (as I've never disliked anything Owen has produced)but the best thing is no stand out favorite this time.. no KTDG, no TLBC, no BTW, no COW, not even a LSTAER just a new favorite every few minutes. Better than Heartland.. I thought that hard to do.. I'd expected as good.. nope... this is even better.. some achievement.. nice one
[Edit]..oh..someone told me the other 2 bonus tracks on the Japanese edition are alternative version of I Am Not Afraid and The Secret Seven. No idea if that's true of false. Sounds plausable.. I've been hopimg for a Simon Bookish remix as Leo did such a great job with KTDQ lat time out... I'm guessing if true might be earlier versions. [/Edit]

I really hope we'll get another version of The Secret Seven; it's my favorite song right now
