I do love it when the year starts off with some cracking albums; Heartland, Contra, Hot Chip's One Life Stand and Babylon Circus' La Belle Etoile are all ace, and I've only given it one listen so far, but first impressions of Yeasayer's Odd Blood are really really excellent.

This is probably *very* uncool, but I came across Peter Gabriel's new album, a series of orchestral covers of indie songs, and you can stream the whole thing here: www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2010/feb/04/peter-gabriel-scratch-backSome of it's a bit vocally weak in my opinion, but you, know, orchestral albums are few and far between! And Mirrorball and Après moi (as in Regina!) are quite good, and My body is a cage isn't too bad either. EDIT: Scratch that, My body is a cage is bloody brilliant.

One of my favourite Korean musician. I've just got her new album. She plays a Korean traditional instrument which I really like its sound. (The big one with 12 strings.) Music itself is not the exact traditional style but you can see the difference from the western classics. Song title, "Jansang" means "Afterimage". vimeo.com/8719941+ This is her early song. I love it a lot and it sounds like Korean traditional more. vimeo.com/8720240Try & Enjoy!!

I'm hoping Boy of Bark will release something this year. He'd almost fallen off my radar until today, when I noticed he'd posted a new song on his MySpace. It's amazing, I really can't wait to hear more from him. www.myspace.com/boyofbark

I really like bits of it, but I've got mixed feelings on it overall. The weak vocals are a big problem for me. I mean, the big sweeping orchestra bit is cool and all, but frankly Peter I just don't really believe your body is a cage. And that's not the kind of lyric you can get away with doing half-assed. Win Butler's unconventional vocal stylings are unlikely to sweep him into the final rounds of American Idol or anything but you can't ever doubt the guys conviction, and his voice is such a huge part of those songs that it seems to me that if you're going to do without it, you damn well better have something other than a bit of Randy Newman singy-talking in it's place. Some of the other covers are just a bit baffling and pointless. In particular, the Elbow one, I really don't think he brings anything to it at all other than a fondness for it. I can't really imagine anybody else getting away with such a plodding Aerosmithy version of Heroes, neither. So yeah, I like bits and pieces, I enjoyed it, it just doesn't really feel like it was worth an album. I'll be keeping an ear out to hear the other artists return the favour all the same.

So the super secret leak isn't so secret anymore. Maybe the huge filesize will scare some prospective gobblers away?
Safely, I can say this is my favourite Joanna Newsom Album.

I'll have a little tour too, going to Chicago, Omaha... and a couple other places along the way. For me Heartland is one of the most transformative albums I've ever had the privilege of listening too, it's at the top for me at the moment. I'm very much looking forward to Joanna's new album as well. Owen is finaly playing in my home town in May! See you then! So excited.

Sadly, I can say that I was dissapointed with the Joanna Newsom album. It a fine bunch of songs, but just doesn't go anywhere. It sounds like I'd hear it before on first listen. I'm not saying it's a bad album and I'm sure it will be a favourite for many, just a lot less than I wanted and expected.

I went into it with no expectations. Zero. When the tracks were posted p4k, I didn't download them, or listen to them at all. Or listen to old Joanna Newsom. Just took the album as whatever it was. Which is a few incredible songs followed up with the rest of the really good tracks. I think its a "have tracks show up in shuffle and enjoy" kind of album, not like "listen to 2hrs of new jn in one sitting." kind of album.

So the super secret leak isn't so secret anymore. resisting, resisting, resisting........ I didn't wait for Heartland (which is good I guess being I officially got the record today). but I preordered this, and it comes out tomorrow. I can at least wait 'till the end of the week before I lose all hope in the delivery men and women who'll handle this record, right?

I think a pre-order should give you the right to download the album once it comes out. I mean, it won't even be a leak anymore, and you already paid for it.
