I think a pre-order should give you the right to download the album once it comes out. I mean, it won't even be a leak anymore, and you already paid for it. I wouldn't worry about any kind of "consumer code" when it comes to music. You should be able to download it guilt-free, as long as you're getting the real deal and not a leak. It seems to me that the best artists are more concerned with making art than selling it. These days, paying for music is more about supporting the artist's endeavours than earning the right to listen to them.

The only thing I hate about albums leaking is that downloading them leaves me waiting for the opportunity to finally buy the CD. Never listened to Joanna Newsom before, but to me it's perfect music to inspire creative thoughts.

I understand where you're coming from, and like the point tristan mentioned, I'm not not-downloading it because I feel I don't desirve it... but being it is already on its way I think it would be really awesome to listen to it for the first time in all of its 33rpm's through a record player, admiring all of the packaging while doing so... I can't remember the last time I heard a full album for the first time on vinyl then digital... gosh I'm so sappy...

I think it would be really awesome to listen to it for the first time in all of its 33rpm's through a record player, admiring all of the packaging while doing so. Damn right it is. Long live physical media. It's spooky that, as a result of this digital oriented world, the full-sensory experience of a Real Record was ever in jeopardy. iPods help us cue soundtracks to the mundane experience of daily life, but a vinyl LP can only be the soundtrack to listening to a vinyl LP. That's something really special.

Oh, well that makes sense. Duh! I have no record player, so for me there's no point waiting for a physical cd.

I understand that, but even a CD can be something, dare I say it?, sacred. It's not the just the product itself; it's how we treat the magic contained therein.

I wish more bands, or at least labels, understood that.
It seems to me that if you're trying to compete with people's instinct to pirate the thing as soon as they can, you want to provide them with an alternative that's actually worth physically owning and playing with. It doesn't take much, just a creative quirk of the packaging or something thoughtful in the liner notes, but it can really add to the whole thing. Weird that among the bigger labels this seems to be a lost art, when they're the ones who are always whining so hard about how download culture is damaging them. It always seems to be the indier outfits who actually make an effort in putting thought into presenting an album as a whole, when surely they can least afford to spend the extra cash per unit. Anyway.
EDIT: Hey, new usertitle. How many posts before I don't sound a bit like a hostile douche again?

Richie, you know fine well you're not alone on this front. how many times have I been awake with you at stupid hours not going to bed yet because I hadn't adequately expressed how I felt about a piece of music? (for the rest of you, "too many" is the answer to that question) the most exciting part about my face not hurting anymore after my wisdom teeth being taken out is that when i AM better and i go home, there will likely be a certain package containing "broken bones" by "gowns" waiting for me.

Another thing I like about vinyl is that it makes me properly listen to music. When I got heartland I put it on and just sat and listened to it from start to finish. Whereas these days due to a combination of being busy and mostly listening to music through my laptop (though with better speakers) or my ipod, I rarely actually concentrate on the music I'm listening to as I'm normally doing something else at the same time.
