something to think about is that every record that gets stolen from the internet effects my publistist, booking person, record labels, distributor and band. all of these entities are independant and punk rock, these are not big lame corporations that are being stolen from but small, grass roots buisnesses and people who are trying really hard to be supportive of new music adn stealing from them makes it more and more difficult to exhist

i do not mean to sound like an asshole. just think about it before you do it with any small band.

or, if you do download something, perhaps to check out a new band you wanted to hear, and you like it, don't forget to buy the album later. i try to buy a lot of my cd's/records from the artists themselves at shows, to further help support the band, but don't forget to support online/independent record stores as well

If it wasn't for this wonderful thing called mp3s I would have never heard "Knife Play," and thus, never would have risked purchasing the record simply based off some positive (and no doubt perplexed) reviews. Such is the world we live in.
Sadly, the truth is that the majority of people don't follow up and purchase the record(s). But the fact of the matter is, mp3 downloading is here to stay and the only way that artists can combat it is to simply put out a good product.

i probably wouldn't have bought ''knife play'' if it wasn't for mp3. and although i downloaded the new album, i fully intend on ordering it as soon as it becomes available. mp3 hasn't made me buy less music (far from it!), it's only made me make better decisions as to what albums are worth plopping down a $20 for. i can't even think of the last time i was disappointed in an album i bought. yeah, there have been times that i didn't bother buying the real thing after downloading it, but that would be due solely to the shittiness (or, in some cases, availibility) of the music.

If it weren't for MP3s, I wouldn't know of half the artists I love today. MP3s have introduced me to hundreds of artists from all around the world. Since I began downloading MP3s, I have also began buying many many albums. Before MP3s, I had maybe fifty CDs; since then, my CD (and record) collection has grown to about 300 CDs and a couple more hundred records.
I hate when people compare downloading music to walking into a store and stealing a copy. If I steal a copy, there is no chance of me buying it. Why would I? I have a copy. If I download something, there is a very good chance that I will be buying it. Everytime I get any money, it goes straight to buying music.
So basically, I'm going to be buying the album?
blahblahblah

jamie is one of the nicest musicians i've ever met. he takes the time to ask what his fans names are when they talk to him at shows.. so don't give him crap for disagreeing with you. there's no right answer, it has to be hard for a musician to know something is being essentially stolen.
to me, i do as much as i can as a college student with no money to support music, i listen to about 400 bands, and have all their stuff downloaded, and whenever i have spare money i buy their music. do i feel like i'm doing something bad with that? no. but you have to see that there's another side to it. overall i think independent artists are helped by mp3s, the internet, etc.. i mean i wouldn't know about xiu xiu, kind of like spitting, casiotone for the painfully alone, or countless other smalltime acts that i now consider to be favorites. i wouldn't have gone to their shows without downloading their stuff.. but it's not measurable, you can't chart the effects with a graph.
all i'm saying is giving jamie crap on his own message board for being worried about a leak is just crap. i may agree with your argument mostly, but being an ass about it only hurts your "cause"

to the "anonymous poster", fuck you. why is it always the anonymous people that are such fucking jerks?
jamie was not being a jerk about it at all, i mean the album was leaked two months before it was even scheduled to come out. that's just a little unnerving.
to the people that download music and it has caused them to buy more records because they found out about new artists etc. etc., that is awesome. but there are people who just download music and never buy anything and i am sure those are the people who he mainly directed the post to. i work in an independent record store and you wouldn't believe how many people come in and say "man i couldn't download this CD online so now i have to buy it shit" and i just can't believe these people and i realize why the last independent record store i worked at went out of business and why the one i currently work at is hurting so bad. for the sake and love of music, if you are someone that downloads music and you like it by all means buy it!!!!!!!
you can put your steve albini and mens recovery project info up all you want but i don't think it helps your argument. i just think it goes to show even more how hard it is to try and make a living off music especially if people are just downloading it and not buying it now-a-days.
so, anonymous poster, shove it. this is the xiu xiu message board, at least show some fucking respect and if you are not going to, then leave.

Mmm, Jamie has a totally 100% valid point in my eyes, but I don't think there's any need to worry that everyone on this board won't buy at least one copy... I know i'll be ordering it the second I'm able.

All I'm saying is that asking people not to download is not going to make much of a difference. Small labels have wretched distribution and very often wretched accounting procedures--they might release your recording, but you won't get paid. You can mess with the publicists, you can take a big shit all over production--but you do not fuck with the fans. Common knowledge.
