Hey buddy when was the last time you thwarted a norm? Can't risk it eh? Too much at stake? Nowhere else to go? Unqualified for "janitorial deployment"? Look out! Here they come again! It's a bunch of guys that live that old joke: it's YOU and two billion of your closest friends standing in shit up to your chins, chanting: "DON'T MAKE A WAVE!!!" Sure Jamie's nice (when he wants something.)

Think about it: a record doesn't get leaked just BECAUSE. Somebody's posting it. Somebody with the album in advance. Maybe somebody shouldn't have given the album out in the first place. DUH.

thanks for all the support and dissenting comments to anonymous: even though i TOTALLY disagree with you, thanks for speaking your mind (but to freddy that "fuck you" was well placed HA!) the idea that mp3s actaully induce people to buy more records is an interesting theory I will have to think more about that PS xiu xiu's label 5RC/kill rock stars always pays as do most small labels. it is big labels that treat bands shitty and put our shitty music usually. if a label is putting out a band that sells 2000 records and then 500 are down loaded that is a huge chunk of the money that makes it possible for that label to take a risk on putting out a challenging new band that may change your life or my life PPS to everyone who did download it and liked it and said so, well, out of the corner of my mouth, thank you

KRS/5RC and SubPop are two of the worst offenders when it comes to sending promos out to stores WAY in advance. I can understand the need to get reviewers their copies, but I work in a record store and there's just no need for us to have copies of these things so early. I can't help but wonder if they're shooting themselves in the feet a little on that one.
That said, I think anyone interested enough to download an album 2 months before its scheduled release would be the same person waiting in line to buy it the day it came out anyhow. A band like Xiu Xiu.... people know it's not coming from some huge corporation or a dude living in a palace in LA. They wanna support it anyhow.
And Jamie, having heard this 3 or 4 times now -- this is the best album yet, and certainly seems like the most personal(?). The two are definitely linked, I'd say. If you respond again, and aren't sick of answering it -- how much influence did band members or outside people have on the songs on the album?
(See? People are gonna want the liner notes to know these things! ;D)

as i see it.. it's a little hard when someone tells you you can download a yet to be released record of one of your favourite artists and you try to sit idley by until it's actually released.. we all succumb to the temptation and bask in the brand new sounds.. and yes, liner notes and artwork are the added treat when the time to buy the record arrives
i do agree it really isn't necessary sending out promos so early, or early at all with all that it's affecting these days

i'm way late, but chiming in anyhow. i will download now & buy the album as soon as it's released. even preorder if it's available. Xiu Xiu is the most interesting thing i've ever heard & if it wasn't for mp3 downloads i might never have known. i downloaded all of the albums & then quickly bought them because they are fucking great! & to the person that said jamie is one of the nicest musicians they've ever met. i second that one!!!!

jamie- the question is: how much actually goes into making an album vs. what you are actually paid? I find that the proportion of shitty bands/shittly labels is about the same. There are the big three yes--but--hundreds of tiny little sub divisions not neccessarily related, in my understanding. Of course I must assure you I have no experience in this sort of thing, I am basing my opinions only upon what I've read. Perhaps you could enlighten me a little. I wouldn't expect you to agree with me, but thank you for doing your part to foster freedom of speech on this board.

Those 500 downloaded albums do not actually represent PRODUCT missing, of course you understand. This reminds me of this scandal wherein "a certain company" decided to bring in a guy who would pack half the product supply away (which he would sell on the black market) so that the record company could put up a big "out of stock" sticker and claim a loss at the same time. Something to think about. Jamie, really be careful. These things do happen.

& to the person that said jamie is one of the nicest musicians they've ever met. i second that one!!!! i'll 3rd that (which i don't believe is proper grammar...) on the last tour, i talked to him at one show, and he was very nice, remembering my emails about the yahoo forum, etc. he was exceedingly polite (even when i brought up ibopa), and when i went the second night, he came up to me and my friend to talk to us, and my friend was shocked at how polite and down to earth he was... he even played a song i requested and allowed me to tape the show (horrid tape, not worth posting)... so, to the person who said he's nice (when he wants something), bite my ass i also downloaded some xiu xiu tracks after i heard about them, and based on those tracks, i went to my local record store and ordered the album and ep... now, i usually use downloading for mostly live/out-of-print stuff (look what i'm sharing), but i definately use it to find out about new artists, and i don't think people would be paying as much attention to xiu xiu if it weren't for mp3s... i mean, who is really willing to go out and buy something that is purposefully abrasive and shocking when they haven't heard it? and none of the local radio stations here really play xiu xiu. so it's a new way to expose audiences... ok, well, i guess all of this has been said in one way or another, but i felt like rambling for a bit... done now

Yah, the album is good. i'd like to hold it. like a lot of you here, i was exposed to xiu xiu by way of file sharing (mp3) and i do believe that if the album is strong, it will be purchased. one time i linked the 'i broke up' mp3 on a local music forum, here, in salt lake city and it got some strong reactions.
