it's so simple... if you don't want people downloading mp3's, just make vinyl. people can still make mp3's off vinyl, but most people will be too lazy to go to the trouble.

The White Stripes record people tried that for Elephant, just giving out the album early to reviewers on vinyl, but a few still took the time to rip it, and then those people just shared with everyone else and then it was all over the net.
Besides, I'm guessing CDs still sell better than vinyl, and only to press vinyl would reduce record sales.

and the band sunburned band of the hand also released a vinyl only release, and despite the fact that they're not very well known, that album was also recorded onto mp3 and now available on soulseek, so it's not really a great option

i'm a person who never really liked xiu xiu before and i downloaded fabulous muscles and now i'm going to buy it. chalk one up for the positive power of file sharing. 'clowne town' and 'i luv the valley oh' are the bomb. i'm friends with picols, 'sup music lovers.

another Fabulous Muscles mp3 success story: i downloaded the album because it's not possible to find it here in Bergen, Norway yet, and i am of course in love with it. considering paying a lot of shipping just to buy it legit and give those folks some money so they can eat and make more amazing albums. so yes, it can be positive. dalas www.allwomenaredead.com

Uh.
I'm not going to read this entire topic to see if the topic poster is truly Jamie or not but
let's just say that I would never have heard Xiu Xiu if not for mp3s. I rarely have the money to go to live shows and if I did I cannot drive to live shows, being that I am 15 and have no license. However, with mp3s, I am a Xiu Xiu fan and proud owner of Fabulous Muscles.
I really don't see how anyone who downloads songs by bands like Xiu Xiu wouldn't care to buy albums as soon as they possibly could. It's not like they're Linkin Park fans or shit like that.

certainly it's different when knowledgable downloaders actually give a damn........... I am one for aesthetics myself. I like the whole package deal...that is how the band invisioned their release.. ..unless you're specifically releasing for the net...which will probably continue reciprocally. but to all you listeners whose internet is your only musical chance, then hell, i'd rather have you listen somehow than not at all. be sure to send jamie and the band some happy creations in the mail.

sunburned hand of the man, is the name of the band. just in case anyone was trying to find some stuff about them
i agree, btw, that if the real fans buy the cd, it's ok to download. radiohead did this as an experiment, when they prereleased kid a (i think) on line for free on their website. they knew that the hardcore radiohead fans would want the album art.
the big labels not supporting independent music--why should they? they are not about music, they are about business and making money. sad but true, most people have terrible taste (or no taste at all, in that they dont' care) in music. slamming the big record companies for not supporting money just doesn't make any sense. they arent' charities. let's face it--we like xiu xiu, but this is not music that will sell 25 million copies. people aren't smart enough to get it.

The mp3 thing is the grestest thing in the world that has ever happened to inependant bands! It gets them exposure! There are a few things that you can't download (shirts, stickers, and concert admission) and with an extra 1,000 fans or so because of downloading, you make your money back from lost album sales. And besides with extra people at the shows it makes for a better atmosphere, and that is what music is about!
We, the BiscottiDuo always buy the albums of our favorite fans, but under stand if people want to save there money for an admission ticket to the show instead!
We are such supporters of independant music, expecially (Xiu Xiu) that in Denton we spent over $200 dollars at the merch booth AND YOU SHOULD AS WELL!!!!!!!!
Love BiscottiDuo

Xiu Xiu won't make tons of money on vinyl if they keep pressing only 200 copies of their LP's. There really are lots of people who would buy their stuff on vinyl if it were more available outside of shows. And not selling merch via your website is shooting yourself in the foot, no doubt about it.
But as for you people saying "pirated mp3's got me into Xiu Xiu", there are mp3s of how many tracks available on KRS, 5rc, Absolutely Kosher, or their own website?
