Vestenet, where were you standing? I may have seen you/heard you gasp. I couldn't even believe that he played The Miner Becomes Forgetful (which was amazing) AND Man With No Ankles (which I'd only heard in bad quality recordings). It only just sunk in that he did because I was SO excited that he played The Great Elsewhere. I'm actually pretty embarrassed about my reaction because...well, it is completely unlike me. I do not scream with excitement at shows, but it was really the only one that I was hoping for, and my excitement kept building as he mouthed it to Thomas and played the first few notes, and I just could not keep it in when he actually announced it. Also, their "Why You So Obsessed With Me?" rendition was amazing. I could not stop laughing. "That was beautiful, Thomas. Thank you for sharing that moment with me." I was more or less dead center in front of Owen, about twenty or so feet away from the stage. Maybe more. And I think it was to my right and back, where I heard someone say "Yes!" before "The Great Elsewhere" started (you can hear it in the recording, too). Maybe that was you! Even if it wasn't, I certainly shared your excitement. And, for me, it's spontaneous outbursts like that which give character and color to live shows--I think they say more than any review after the fact could. And I didn't even realize that was Mariah Carey they were referencing! That makes it all the better. Thank you, indeed, Thomas.

all this Thomas talk has me too excited.
and now The Man With No Ankles is my new favourite song. Great. And the fourth album hasn't even been named yet.

The show last night was AMAZING of course. The setlist seemed to be about the same as the one from the other night that was posted, except no Man With No Ankles. But instead he played This Lamb Sells Condos (Thomas whistled a lot during this song and he is quite the whistler I must say)!! and He Poos Clouds! I enjoyed it a loooot. Especially the Great Elsewhere. I had no idea how deep and bassy he could make his violin sound, it was crazy, made the theater shake.

themechanicaleab: I think that's more a statement on the age and lack of structural integrity of the Wilbur.

This is most likely true, but it just made his performance all the more epic!

Vestenet, that was me! Based on your description of where you were, I think I was standing pretty much right behind you. Also, you can hear me really clearly right as he says "The Great Elsewhere" at the end of the Many Lives -> 49 MP recording, which is kind of embarrassing. I think you're right, though. It says a lot about the energy and quality of the show, especially since I'm really not the type to scream "Yes!" at a live show, no matter how excited I am.
I know! At one point, my sister leaned over to me and whispered, "How the hell is he making cello noises with a violin?" It's really impressive.

Speaking of crazy tone, I still have no idea how he can make the violin shriek on Flare Gun. Is it just very, very fast bowing? Either way, it's a mesmerizing effect, however piercing and loud it can get.
Ahhh, listening to Lewis Takes Off his Shirt has just...gah, I miss so much last night. I loved being in that place he was crafting, I loved being able to see him even if I didn't mention Link's Awakening like I wanted to. It was so warm in there...like freed silver. Like a space all its own of a man (and sometimes another man) creating sounds and patterns as large as everything out of a tiny space. I miss it so much.
Also, I think he was wearing the Calvin Klein socks.
What a difficult obsession.

The show on the 29th was absolutely amazing. By the time his set was over I didn't even want The Mountain Goats to come on. I was so upset when it ended.

Crud, I totally missed that Final Fantasy was touring with someone else. Oh well, I'll just have to go up to NYC for the January show!

Hey guys, it's is Eidyia from the Mountain Goats forum. I was at the FF, Mountain Goats show at the Wilbur. (I was the crazy little brunette who was the front row near Thomas who was jumping up and down all through the Mountain Goats set). I'd never heard FF before that night but I loved Owen. Thomas was hiding behind the drums at one point and smiled at me. It was really fun to watch Owen pack up all his stuff on stage but I felt bad because he probably felt awkward that I was watching him. I'm sorry that there were a few Mountain Goats fans who were being assholes. I wanted to hide when someone yelled "Going to Georgia" which is a Mountain Goats song. Anyways, I thought you'd like to see some Owen love on the Mountain Goats forums. You can find it here: www.mountain-goats.com/forums/read.php?4,84226 Love, Eidyia

NYCTaper has posted recordings of the Mountain Goats sets from Webster Hall & Bell House. The encore of the Bell House show features FF - you can get it here: www.nyctaper.com/?p=2092I am just downloading it now. Should be excellent. I am hoping they also taped the Final Fantasy set.

hello! I also came over from the Mountain Goats Forums. Although there might have been some rude Mountain Goats fans in the audience, I wanted to reassure you all that many of us were also mesmerized and impressed by the wonderful Mr. Pallett and his partner in crime, Thomas. At the Bell house show, a group of Mountain goats fans even started the chant to get Thomas back on stage. A bunch of us are hooked and will be at the NY FF show!
As for nyctaper, he did record and master the final fantasy sets, but is waiting for the go from Owen before he posts them online for download.

so yeah, i am from the mountain goats forum as well, and i just wanted to pop over here and reinforce what eidyia and danielle have said. i had an awareness of mr. pallett's music before this tour, but had never had any exposure. after catching three shows on this tour (dc, philadelphia, and webster hall), i've purchased nearly the entire final fantasy discography and already have heartland pre-ordered. i was looking forward to seeing final fantasy's set, but i was not prepared to be floored and transfixed the way i was. owen made a convert out of me.
and don't be discouraged by the seemingly poor respone he got by some of the crowds at the shows; you're going to get that at just about any show, whenever anyone is perceived to be an "opening act" (although judging from the length of owen's set, i would argue this was almost more of a co-headlining situation). the general sense over on the mountain goats forum is one of support and respect. i think owen made quite a few new fans on this tour - i know that i am going to be in attendance at the january 18 bowery ballroom show with several of my fellow mountain goats friends (hi, danielle!).
also, i did record the dc, philly, and webster hall shows. (though i am going to guarantee you nyctaper's recording of webster sounds 50 times better than mine. vestenet, i haven't listened to your recording yet, but i'm looking forward to doing so - i know my recording is missing the first song, unfortunately. dc is complete.) newbie question time: does owen have an explicit audience taping policy posted somewhere? i couldn't find one online, and i'd just like to know i have his blessing before sharing these recordings. if anybody could point me in the right direction, i'd be grateful; otherwise, i will just e-mail patrick.
thanks for tolerating all my newbieishness, all!

So strange! I think he once referred to it as kids eating too much cake. I think he knows that bootlegs will happen, and he doesn't always agree with them... i dunno. I have like 2 days worth of live boots from Owen's sets. I don't think he will descend from the heavens (read: toronto) and say NO! but he might frown upon it. I didn't get any stops from my boot of the edmonton show a few months back...?
