I apologise in advance for the following rant
I think Jamie was completely justified in blogging what he blogged in the way he blogged it.
If only because all this talk about ripping this and uploading that is so unashamedly and blatantly out in the open like its no big deal.
Its HIS music
No wonder he's pissed!!!!
Two bands I loved have broken up recently.
Grandaddy and Aereogramme. Both said in interviews that money was one of the big reasons they split up, that they were finding it hard to cope and pretty much gave in.
And it makes me wonder if they'd still be around if it wasnt for piracy. And it fuckin sucks to think that something like that could be the reason I dont get to hold a new Aereogramme album in my hands EVER AGAIN. I'm not saying that before internet piracy that no bands ever split up because of the lack of money.
All I am saying is that today you cant say it isnt a factor.
Stealing from bands that fill stadiums is one thing.
Everyone knows most of them are over-rated and over paid in the first place. And in the long run these bands always seem to come out with a decent return despite who is stealing from them.
BUT
When it comes to smaller indie bands if your simply taking and putting fuck all back in then theres a chance you could turn around one day to find that band split up and then where are you? You've just shot yourself in the foot and welldone.
I'm not going to pretend I've never 'taken' music before and I'm not going to pretend that illegal downloads is simply a BAD thing. Its not as black and white as that.
Illegal downloading is an amazing tool for finding music that otherwise someone would never have heard. Its cuts out the middle man, the shit head sitting in a sky scraper in his fancy suit who thinks we all want to listen to My Chemical Romance or The Black Eye Peas. And one day this amazing ability to get any music at anytime anywhere could possibly see all music on an equal playing field and bury that useless middle man bastard forever. But until that day we can and should take all these things into account, because if we dont we are part of the problem.
And if you just dont give a shit and never will then
BOOOOOO YOU SUCK
Ah whatever, I'm out of steam, that'll do.
