______________WAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTTTT_______________________
hi there, you friendly xiuxiuians,
being the one who has payed for the making of this record, i would pretty much appreciate it if you would NOT offer the JS tracks for free!
here's a short story for you: i am running my label - beatismurder records - as a one-man-company with my own money. i have payed about $1900 to make the picture disc, and by now i haven't earned back this amount of money BY FAR.
in order to keep my small "business" alive and to keep on releasing awesome records (and actually to keep on living), it's pretty much necessery to sell some more records. i don't wanna sound like metallica, but: if these js pic disc tracks leak i will not be able to keep doing all this.
if anyone decides to obtain the tracks from an obscure online source (i.e. filesharing), then please consider donating a small amount of money to shop@beatismurder.com.
also, please keep ordering the record. nacht a.k.a. ben has some more copies in the USA, and there are plenty more here in europe. (oh, and you should also check out ben's band br'er - myspace.com/brrer - they will release their debut on beatismurder these days).
thanks for your attention. i know you will understand my point.
best, dino

i agree with dino. rip off itunes if you want, but ripping on tiny labels sucks. and with a band like xiu xiu, which has a good deal of people who buy their records, but a pretty small cult following who buys stuff like picture disks, a small label making money does actually depend on the people who write on the shzine and stuff.
plus, isn't it like $10 or $12? isn't it worth it to have something that looks super cool?
also, begging for someone to rip tracks and put them on the board is a little annoying.

cool, no prob, just wanted to hear from both sides, I'll keep them to myself, I know some people who just have picdisc's pinned to their wall, lookin pretty, so why not buy one, btw, if anyone wants those other tracks from remixed & covered, you can join emusic and get 25 free downloads, those are on there, then quit, I did that two weeks ago, I don't know if they have those air force instrumentals though, I hadn't heard about those until now, they do have some tender buttons, including two live shows exclusive to emusic, and the xiu xiu remix of done it now, got it now, sorry to anyone who is disappointed that I won't be sharing the picdisc but I will share my polaroid scans someday, I had them upped to divshare, but they don't seem to be working, you can only see thumbnails, arggghhh

music is to be heard, not so necessary to be sold. you wont be giving it away to the world but the 30-so people on this board.
herehecomes, i doubt you buy EVERTHING you listen to. there's no reason in prohibiting sharing some music. it just sucks. eventually anyone who wants it will get it. if i dont get something and there is no way, i will order it and then i will rip it and share it with those who can't buy it. there's really not enough money for people to buy all of that stuff and not every one here is working and has a lot of money.
and yeah those of you who buy the record and pin it to your walls just because it looks 'cool' (and you cant even listen to it)--- i don't even wanna begin commenting on that shit.

are you fucking serious? so now record labels have to provide a free record player for you to buy shit? you are a fucking douchebag. seriously. go buy a fucking record player. CDs are fucking done. It's going to be all vinyl and digital downloads in the future, so do yourself a favor and go buy a record player. It sounds better and not to mention the artwork is always better plus you can get rare 7"s and stuff such as this with material not available elsewhere and it will sound a lot better than your stupid ipod. And if this was offered as digital downloads that you can purchase, more than likely ONE of you would buy the mp3's, and then upload them to YSI or some crap for everyone else. Part of the point of the picture disc is that its a limited, collectible, cool item that contains some rare stuff on it not available elsewhere. so maybe save up some money little by little and get a record player, they aren't that expensive. I mean supposedly you had the money to buy a fucking ipod right? They are way more expensive than a lot of record players out there. And then maybe actually buy a record for once.

it's true that music is made to be heard. well, duh. but another important aspect is that whether we like it or not, music has also become a business. but that's how you guys get to hear it. because artists and record companies and promoters, etc etc put all their efforts and money and lives into making and producing this music. and you have to be respectful of the fact that this is their business as much as it is their art. it's inevitable that people will share music. we all know that whether you post about it or not, you're ripping music anyways. but in this case, when someone who is a member of the board requests formally and politely to please not rip a few songs, because it is important for him and makes an impact in his life, it is just downright disrepectful and fuck-headed to say, fuck you, i'm gonna do it anyways. you might think that just downloading a song or two for yourself makes no difference, but apparently it does, and that's why "liger" is asking not to do it. and the same type of mindless leaking and ripping affected the last xiu xiu record sales so badly that those involved had to take drastic measures to prevent it: i.e. not a pip for even the most devoted fans. so yeah. leaking and sharing is inevitable. everyone does it, i'm sure. but just like they say with alcohol, do it responsibly, and as far as it is possible, respectfully.

alright.
too many reactions. i can't/don't want to answer all comments regarding the record, my label and my personal situation.
sithie: yes i have consodered a real job. not that this would be of your business, but i am a student, full time (touring) musician and label owner. i am paying my rent with DJing and writing for magazines. please tell me what kind of "real job" still fits between all this and i will do it.
one thing that i can't understand is how some of you can react so hateful when i say that i would like to sell some records. the thing is: if you're downloading the songs, you are stealing from me. you are in fact stealing my money. sad but true.
i am NOT trying to earn money. in fact, i know that i can't even get the money back that i spent for the pressing plant.
i'm not prohibiting music downloads, and i'm not trying to make you all buy a record player. wtf?
i CAN NOT release this record in other formats than vinyl. it's a piece of art, concepted and made by jamie and david h. and the picture disc is the only format THEY want this record to be. and i respect it. i respect and love these people and their work so much, that i spent a LOT of money in order to help them create their art.
i'm somehow shocked. how can anyone of you attack me at all? am i not on your side? i'm not the "bad" music industry. i'm not fucking metallica or something. i'm just trying to make and release independent music. what's your problem, mangs? i don't get it.
so here's a possible solution for all you people without a record player: if you order the picture disc, i will give you a cdr with the songs for free. that's the only thing i can do.
and i will keep on asking people to NOT share the songs. be it here or on ateaseweb or whereever. and i hope and believe that i will be understood.

i am on your side, honestly. i just am under the impression music should be free. i understand youre a struggling artist. there are a hundred thousand of you.
i book small shows for mostly local acts at venues (PWRFL POWER, 1/27 @ SMALLS) in harrisburg, pennsylvania. have i ever seen a single dollar from it? no. do i want to? no. i love being involved with the live music scene. i understand you are not me and it is your right to ask for money for this thing you have created.
what i'm saying is take a look at someone like kitchencabinet. he asked for the addresses of 10 (12?) people from the board and sent them all BARR posters, mixtape and demo cdrs, photos, ETC for FREE.
i know you may not be in the position financially to do it, but selling records is obsolete now.
