there is a lot of stupid going on in this thread. haha yes! okay. so i think that the CD format has become almost entirely obsolete. the only people who still buy CD's are our parents, and they're even starting to switch to iTunes. if i know that hardly any money will go to the artist, i probably would download it. i very rarely buy cd's. i don't buy cd's because it feels like i'm paying for the packaging and a folded up piece of paper, since i don't have a car to listen to cd's in, and i pretty much just rip them onto my computer and then put them in a drawer. i buy vinyl because it feels like a tangible object, and the artwork is often really beautiful because they can print the sleeves on different types of paper and such. however, sometimes i feel gypped because i tend to listen to music on my ipod more than my record player, since i obviously can't carry it with me. when a band includes a free mp3 download of the i feel like that's really great, because even if i don't want to use it, i can share the album with someone else. in a case like this, the fact that it was only intended to be on vinyl was the artist's choice, and i think that should be respected. so yeah.

alright. too many reactions. i can't/don't want to answer all comments regarding the record, my label and my personal situation. sithie: yes i have consodered a real job. not that this would be of your business, but i am a student, full time (touring) musician and label owner. i am paying my rent with DJing and writing for magazines. please tell me what kind of "real job" still fits between all this and i will do it. one thing that i can't understand is how some of you can react so hateful when i say that i would like to sell some records. the thing is: if you're downloading the songs, you are stealing from me. you are in fact stealing my money. sad but true. i am NOT trying to earn money. in fact, i know that i can't even get the money back that i spent for the pressing plant. i'm not prohibiting music downloads, and i'm not trying to make you all buy a record player. wtf? i CAN NOT release this record in other formats than vinyl. it's a piece of art, concepted and made by jamie and david h. and the picture disc is the only format THEY want this record to be. and i respect it. i respect and love these people and their work so much, that i spent a LOT of money in order to help them create their art. i'm somehow shocked. how can anyone of you attack me at all? am i not on your side? i'm not the "bad" music industry. i'm not fucking metallica or something. i'm just trying to make and release independent music. what's your problem, mangs? i don't get it. so here's a possible solution for all you people without a record player: if you order the picture disc, i will give you a cdr with the songs for free. that's the only thing i can do. and i will keep on asking people to NOT share the songs. be it here or on ateaseweb or whereever. and i hope and believe that i will be understood. liger, i'm not trying to attack you or react hateful towards you. i'm just posting the facts, sorry! the thing is: if you're downloading the songs, you are stealing from me. you are in fact stealing my money. sad but true. not really true, someone else will buy it, plus this album is limited, it's not like it's going to be in print for the next couple of years. and man, from what you wrote in your posts, you keep acting like Xiu made this album for you, all of things i have read about it, they never even mentioned you. aren't you just distributing it? PS: dude, goooooood luck on trying to ask ateaseweb not to post it...they are Oink's sister, TRUE!

oh, one more thing... i CAN NOT release this record in other formats than vinyl. it's a piece of art, concepted and made by jamie and david h. and the picture disc is the only format THEY want this record to be. seeing how this is a whole art piece/package...why in the world would you care if we upload just the rips? we won't even be getting 70% of the package, seeing how we didn't pay for it, that i can agree with. we won't be getting the art, the pix, the actual vinyl or even real good sounding mp3s, when you rip you still lose some sound and it's hard to get a perfect rip from records anyways. so we won't even be getting all of the goodies that the payers got, only a small piece of it. so i don't see how you can act mean to us peeps that want to hear it

this place used to be sooo much more laid back.
anyway the only thing that seems to make sense to me is liger's proposition of sending a cdr along with the 7". he is not the record industry and i totally understand his point (just to make things clear). Z is acting like an ass though.
is it me or is JS in drama queen overdrive calling everybody here names? (most of us are fans after all, not that it grants us any privileges of course)

hi everybody!
let me just start this by saying that jamie was not calling you all names. we are so lucky to have such amazing fans! i think that the problem is that people who dont work in the, i hate to call it this, indie record biz, dont really understand how horrible and devasting leaks can be for a band. and not just the band but all the many humans who work for next to nothing or nothing to put out music. this has obviously been a heated topic for years and years especially on this blog but, xiu xiu and probably almost any band of our size and smaller will be hurt by file sharing. this is a fact. trust me. you cannot say one thing otherwise. if you do you are wrong. im sorry. we are not money hungry assholes. we will never make a lot of money doing what we do. we just need to survive so we can continue making music. it is that simple. im very frustrated some of the people on this board will not support us in this. i actually take it personally and i know jamie does too that people refuse to respect us enough to understand. thank you guys soooo much for being so excited about our music but please remember that we need certain things so we can continue this band.

thanks to jamie and caralee for the support i was certainly not trying to start a discussion about buying vs downloading music. it's not my cup of tea how you guys get your music. i was just making clear that i am the one who payed for the manufacturing of the picture disc. and i am obviously reading this message board, and people are asking to rip the songs. i THINK it is my right to kindly ask you not to cause damage to my label, right? i'm sorry if this is hard to understand for some of you. as for the argument "i think that music should be for free today"...: alright. fine. really clever. music can not be available for free unless the production (instruments, recording gear, pressing plants) are for free. ever thought about that? are you going to the supermarket and claim that toothpaste should be free? did you also steal all your clothes? if you want free music, then make it your own! i AM supporting things like creative commons. there's a netlabel section at my label's website (www.beatismurder.com) with 9 free releases. furthermore i have free label compilations and remix EPs for customers. but all in all, music is and always was a product like bread or milk or cigarettes. there are people who put money and manpower into the production of it. accept it. none of you would like to work without getting paid for it, right? so why should i? why should xiu xiu? this whole debate is so obsolete... and i still don't understand why people like Z are treating me like the bad guy. everyone can listen to this record. my offer is still valid: order the picture disc and get a cd. so the tracks are available for EVERYONE. next time, please go bugging 5rc or acuarela or tomlab or absolutely kosher. because - you won't believe it - THEY ALSO CHARGE MONEY FOR XIU XIU RECORDS! oh, and one more thing: the reasons why jamie/david/xiuxiu never really promoted the picture disc is that they wanted it to be some kind of super secret. like something you find on the basement. just like the songs on the record. that's why there's no logo or whatever attached to it.
