I sure hope they're just trying to be dramatic! My only guess is that he's waiting to release towards the end of the year (since SO many artists seem to be releasing new albums this spring) and would maybe tour for Island in 2020... Also, I saw this online as well... Next Thursday evening at a music festival, the Brooklyn Youth Chorus is "premiering a new work by Owen Pallett"... wonder what that's about? www.newsounds.org/story/ecstatic-music-festival-2019-wye-oak-and-brooklyn-youth-chorus

Hello
I am OK. Somebody did something really terrible to me last year. It is thankfully resolved, but it's been a lot of work recovering psychologically from it. This recovery has been the only thing delaying the new album, which was completed last March.
My day-to-day life is very joyful these days, my dog is wonderful and my boyfriend is great and I finally found a long-term place for us all to live. I've been busy with working on film scores, chamber music commissions, and arrangement work.
The Flow Festival appearance was announced as the only appearance I was making in 2019, but it's not necessarily true. I will likely be playing more shows this fall... I think the promoters just phrased it that way because no other shows had been announced.
I have stopped posting on Twitter. It used to be a good outlet for me, but most of what I read on it just upsets me these days. It seems to be a format that prioritizes cruelty over compassion, and I have no interest in that discourse.
I hope you're doing very well and that I'll be able to play music again for you soon.

Hey, you found us on our little board adrift in a sea of spam! I'm glad to hear you've been recovering and that things have been looking up day-to-day. Thank you for taking the time to stop by and I hope all is well going forward. (and of course, I eagerly await the day an Island rises into sight <3)

Hey! I’ve just been recognized as a Top Fan in Owen’s Facebook page! Yay! To celebrate, the only update I know of is that Owen did arrangements for a Bell Orchestre show in Hamburg in August! Thank you Owen for replying earlier! We are obviously super excited and can’t wait for all you have in store. I’m dying to hear the new single!

www.nightvalepresents.com/ionlylistentothemountaingoatsSecond season of "I Only Listen to The Mountain Goats" podcast is documenting the making of their new album, the second episode from today includes some bits on Owen's role as producer and player. Hoping they feature interview with him this season! (The first season, a track-by-track breakdown of All Hail West Texas, is also extremely good.) ps.

HELLO, friends! I finally remembered my old login info. Can I join the island? Some of you guys might know (of) me. I am @gdkllr on Twitter, but my name is Elliot. I've been lurking here for 10 years. I'm currently about to turn 21, so you can do the math. I occasionally made a few embarrassing posts but hopefully they've been forgotten. I learned a lot of interesting things from Owen's music and he's been one of the most influential people on my life. As a queer, trans, mentally ill person, Owen's music-- and the kindness and vulnerability of his live shows over the years-- has saved me over and over. But I won't go off about that now. But my god, Owen if you read this, your comment makes me so, so happy. Taking care of oneself is so important, and the fact that you did so makes me proud of the times I have done the same. Not to be dumb and sappy but that's just how it is. Also your dog is beautiful and the video of you walking her gave ME so much joy in my own hard time. (Dogs in shoes are ANGELS on earth). Please know we're all just so happy that you're OK, music or no music. Thank you so, so much for being honest, it means more than you know. That's enough outta me. Nice to meet y'all, though. I'll be around more going forward. Can we, like.... re-inhabit this ProBoards island? 'Cause I miss it!

Oh, ALSO! This is only marginally related to Island hype, but indulge me. My icon is my DND character, a wizardly twink originally inspired in part by E is for Estranged (He's a career imposter who manages a fake noble musical company; "I am a liar, feeding facts to a false fire/ If pathos is borne, borne out of bullshit /In formal attire, I'll score you a string ensemble"). A lot of lyrics from Island seem emotionally and thematically similar to the most vulnerable, least bombastic parts of Heartland. I'm excited to add literally all of them to my character playlist for him. Sorry that's dorky but I feel like if anyone would understand it's you guys! I also wonder if anyone else has created RPG characters inspired by Owen's music. His music lends itself SUPER well to it. Dorkiness aside, I'm really curious abt how Island continues Heartland's commentary on the relationship btwn the creator and the creation. Technically, Lewis is still being guided by Owen in the most literal sense, but narratively, Owen is dead. Wonder if he's thought about that dynamic, or if you guys have, or if it's simply less relevant to Island.

Hi eamas
The singer on "E Is For Estranged" is meant to actually be Owen.
Spectrum 14th Century is meant to be "folk songs about figures within Spectrum", but they are sung largely first-person-- think like Fionn MacCool singing a song about his own exploits:
Oh Spectrum (denizens of Spectrum) Blue Imelda (Lewis) The Butcher (Owen) Cockatrice (denizens of Spectrum, Owen's acolytes) The Ballad Of No-Face (No-Face, the cockatrice)
Heartland:
Midnight Directives (Lewis) Keep The Dog Quiet (Lewis) Mount Alpentine (Lewis) Red Sun No. 5 (Lewis) Lewis Takes Action (Lewis) The Great Elsewhere (Lewis, the second person in the song is meant to be a 'non-believer') Oh Heartland, Up Yours (Lewis) Lewis Takes Off His Shirt (Lewis) Flare Gun (denizens of Spectrum) E Is For Estranged (Owen) Tryst With Mephistopheles (Lewis) What Do You Think Will Happen Then? (Lewis and Owen)
Although Owen "dies" at the end of Heartland-- which is meant to mirror the singer's drowning at the end of Has A Good Home, and the singer's resolve to "put down his violin" at the end of He Poos Clouds-- Owen does not actually die, really.
What happens, specifically? The subject of the song and the author of the song become one. As Heartland was essentially "a songwriter writing (mostly) in third-person", the bodies and intentions of Lewis and Owen converge and become one. Or rather, they cease to exist within the same existential plane... Lewis/Owen exists in Spectrum, and Owen/Lewis exists in "the real world".
The final lines of "What Do You Think Will Happen Then?" are meant to be Owen's true voice, abandoning the world of Spectrum. "This morning, I must get up to see the world around me / right away / what I forgot / by seeing ourselves as words upon the paper / the sun is up / my arms are wide / I am a good man / I am yours." The song finds Lewis/Owen contemplating that death is this great unifying force, but meanwhile, Owen/Lewis sets aside the exercise of writing in third-person and goes back to "the real world".
So, subsequently, the author of In Conflict is basically Owen hisself, that is, myself, writing transparently autobiographical songs. The duality represented in In Conflict could be codified as Owen/Lewis, but is more accurately described as Owen's id and Owen's ego-- Owen's conscious self and Owen's subconscious self-- which, in the end, is what Lewis is really meant to represent, anyway.
Island is different-- all the songs are sung by Lewis. Lewis/Owen makes an appearance-- which is represented, actually, at the moment in the album when suddenly all the vocals become double-tracked and harmonized-- right at the moment that Lewis calls Owen's name: "Owen are you there? / end this nightmare I'm in / rush to my arms in the morning..."
Owen in Island does not have a separate voice or body-- the resurrected Owen seems incapable of anything except appearing as a crystalline blue energy that fucks Lewis into space, in response to his cry for help. I actually have no idea how I'm going to end this whole thing at this point. I have to think about it

I don't know if I wrote this here or spoke it elsewhere, but Heartland's chronology is all out-of-whack, too, which is an unfortunate by-product of "the best sequence".
Originally, the album was to begin with "Red Sun No. 5"-- Lewis leaving his family-- and go from there. "Midnight Directives" was another "exploit" song, until a friend specifically told me that it HAD to be the first track, musically, and so I rewrote the lyrics to essentially be similar to "Red Sun No. 5"-- Lewis leaving his family.
"Keep The Dog Quiet"/"Mount Alpentine" were originally meant to be later in the album, just before "Tryst With Mephistopheles"-- lyrically it makes more sense for Lewis to be singing of his boredom and frustration just before rising up the mountain to execute Owen.
"Flare Gun" and "E Is For Estranged" were meant to be on a separate EP. There were other songs that were meant to be on "Heartland" in their place-- "A Watery Day", "Owen's Voice", a version of "A Man With No Ankles" with different lyrics. The recordings I made of those songs at Greenhouse in Iceland didn't work with Heartland in the end, or I couldn't figure out how to work the lyrics/melody into completed instrumentals.
I felt frustrated with the fractured chronology of Heartland in the end (even if the album hangs together very well musically to my ears), and I put a lot more thought and care into making sure Island was working both musically and lyrically.
It's coming out Q3 2019 btw. We've set the date but we're gonna announce much closer. Already shot a video and two more on the way. Really can't wait for it to be out, at long last.
