Also, what's the time signature of "A Bloody Morning"?? i'm having trouble playing it on guitar and piano. woah this is wild, tried counting it out just now — i think it's in 4 (drum enters on 1) but the off-kilter-ish-ness is all those 1/16th upbeat hits and piano syncopation

My secret hope is for the release to be without any announcement of the release date beforehand so that I can go straight from anticipation to gratification without that amped up anticipation in between... ^_^ I have a different version of that -- missed it, so only just listening now. Also like a surprise thing really that way.
Missed almost everything that's happening this year in music -- really late to the party for album releases of other favourite musicians too (cause pandemic).
Think it might overall actually be a great year in music releases even though obviously not good at all for musicians overall!!!
And the rest .... sigh, so no more. So: Thanks to all the musicians for making it better to get through (world isn't really any different right now anyway from before, just super obvious). And Owen obviously thanks for wonderful new album. In Darkness - wow.

Have there been any news regarding the physical release of Island or Owen’s soundtracks? Can’t wait to see the unified album artwork Steve Kado is doing for the soundtracks!

I have not been able to listen to any music other than this album for the last, I don't know, several months? I feel like the pandemic has me perpetually simultaneously under- and over-stimulated and Island is the thing I keep coming back to in that state. I don't know. I wish I had something smarter to say about it right now but I don't. It's fucking phenomenal.

Some moments cut through this subtlety with a more active hand, like "godkiller's alive" (the first such moment on the album for me-- I've waxed poetic abt its impact), or like "started drinking on the job and the job became easy" (as everyone says that song hits hard). this is such an incredible point, these lines as anchor/pivot points of the album that cut through the subtlety. i'd add "madness is a man among us" and "You don’t need, don’t need, don’t need to die to be forgiven" and of course "Oh, I never learned how to hate" ... that line threaded through "Owen are you there?" and the rest of Fire-Mare reads to me as the axis of Island. the song might be Owen's finest moment to date. bless both versions! Sorry to double-post but, yes, this is a massive part of the draw of the album for me too, those moments of really sharp clarity. 'How badly I wish for it/that we could be angels and not this bullshit' made me actually gasp when I heard it in the Elbphilharmonie stream way back when and it hasn't ever worn off for me. 'Freedom and loneliness, one and the same' is another. Some of this is on a purely sensory/synaesthetic level for me too I think -- A Bloody Morning has a lot of these moments, just great great word sounds that cut through and make little dopamine fireworks in my brain. I have spent a lot of time over the last two months enjoying 'two-masted yellow schooner' and 'ten-mile televista' and 'falsifying our private Thermidor' more than is probably, like, socially acceptable. It's rare for me to enjoy the lyrics of an album so much, I'm usually too hung up on the arrangements, but Island feels so immediate and impressionistic at the same time. It's so interesting. Maybe I just needed to be really tired to have some things to say about it, I guess.

I think one of the biggest strengths of the album, the whole album feels more solemn in some places. Lately i was wondering: how a full electronic version of Island might sound like?? a lá In Conflict in some places.

Sweet! this is barely relevant but speaking of Greg Fox (who co-wrote A Bloody Morning), anyone here listen to Liturgy? H.A.Q.Q. was my favorite album of 2019.

Physical CD. Promo at last Oh wow, very jealous!!! Hopefully this means the physical release will be coming soon! I’ll be glad when all the product is available. Tidal/Spotify are wonderful for quick to digest sounds and coupled with Shazam is great for exploring music, but there’s nothing like owning/possessing physical product.

New interview in the Creative Independent: thecreativeindependent.com/people/musician-owen-pallett-on-being-thoughtful-about-each-decision-you-make/I really enjoyed the discussion of accountability re: festival curation and openers and stuff. The people I've seen open for Sufjan (Moses Sumney and Gallant) were some of the most talented live performers I've ever seen, it's cool to know that his prioritization of marginalized groups was intentional. I also love the lyric-writing advice you gave, Owen. It's a lot more specific and useful than most of what I read... I can't have caffeine but I'll find a way to test it out somehow!

I switched to the Sennheiser 431 microphone back in 2011. It was an accidental switch... Noah (my FOH) and I were doing a show with Halifax Symphony Orchestra and that was just the mic they gave me. Noah was like 'oh this is the right mic for your voice' and so we got a couple of them. I've since turned Regine on to them also, she uses them now as well. They're miraculous microphones. Weirdly not-so-common now, but if you look at videos from the 80s/90s, everybody is using them-- specifically, Whitney and Prince.
That was one big thing, and I just got more confident as a singer, started really writing for my voice. In addition to this, about five years ago I settled on a really, really great vocal chain that I love. It's a hodgepodge of some stuff I learned from Majical Cloudz and some of my own ideas. It's subtle so it doesn't sound "effected", but if I were to turn it off you'd be like "whoa OK, it does make a big difference".

Is there any chance of releasing recordings of the In Conflict songs as written in the songbook (e.g., Secret Seven (version))? What's one more project when you already have twelve in the pipeline?
