Hello little monsters, Back from the Union Chapel night, was such a great show! Uperdated from the set list:
1. E is for Estranged 2. This Lamb Sells Condos 3. Midnight Directives 4. Flare Gun 5. The Butcher 6. Many Lives -> 49mp 7. The Dream Tree (Buffy Saint-Marie cover) 8. He Poos Clouds 9. That's When the Audience Died 10. Lewis Takes Action 11. Keep The Dog Quiet / Mt. Alpentine 12. The Great Elsewhere 13. Lewis Takes Off His Shirt 14. This is the Dream of Win and Regine
The supporting acts were lovely, the song the lady wrote was really sweet. I enjoyed Sam & Nico too, their "wtf?" moments (I think I counted three) were interesting to watch. Also, Simon Bookish (!) was sat at the front to the left if anyone noticed. I'm a big fan of his but I really didn't want to bother him since he wasn't performing. It was a little difficult.
I really enjoyed hearing The Dream Tree being played live with such clear quality. Lewis Takes Action also sounds amazing live.

Hey!
That was my first time seeing Mr Pallett and it was amazing! And to hear Nico Muhly and Beth Orton too :-o!! Amazing! And Simon Bookish was there? That was the best gig I've been to for aaages, and what a beautiful venue.
Seeing that live performance will make me hear Heartland in a very different way, as I didn't realise so much of that soundworld was generated purely by the violin (even if with various effects pedals).
He reminded me a little of Imogen Heap and Múm in his performance, just that because of all the looping... the music has to be really technically accurate, yet still evokes emotion in its delivery... awesome.
And great setlist - was glad for the three belters we got from HPC as well as hearing the new material live... (was surprised how fast he took "Many Lives" - not sure how I felt about that!)
PS. I think you missed He Poos Clouds from the setlist! PPS. *crosses fingers for a bootleg*

7th time I've seen him since May 2005, and doubtlessly the most accomplished set I've ever seen him do. Venue was perfect for him, the performance was technically flawless and the live arrangements of the Heartland material were, for the most part, even better than the album's. I'm a cynical, twisted troll of a man by and large, but I had shivers down my spine during "Lewis Takes Off His Shirt."

Totally agree it was a magical show. The thing that impressed me was the confidence of the performance and definitely having Thomas (hope you’re feeling better now) really compliments Owen so much and gives the songs an extra dynamic. He was perfect foil that spurred Owen on to even greater expression and flourish in both his singing and bowing. The ultimate compliment I can pay to Thomas is that each time he left the stage; I was disappointed inside, even though Owen delivers on his own. Thomas, if that how you are when your feel like you’re at deaths door, then I can’t wait for the next 58 days to go by. ..and as for Owen, apart from the Beyonce moment, he was perfect, probably as good a performance as I’ve seen over the years. I’ve had lots of moment during shows where I have just been so moved that I cease to function, because I’m trapped in the snare of the music. It’s that tingle you get when you feel that someone is doing something just for you (and I don’t mean that in a sexual way) and you feel like you’re the only one he’s playing too. It's pointless me reviewing the show, others will do it so much better than me, but I can confirm that the entire show was recorded in one form or another (including Samamidon/Muhly/Beth/Owen together) and hopefully will start to appear in a few days time. Actually... just a word for the musical selection.. . Excellent.. The Sam and Nico show was amazing and so great to see Dev Hynes ( LightSpeed Champion) again, who played with Owen in Manchester back in 2007. Looking forward to the new album. Setlist..Courtesy of John Can’t wait till the next tour... Roll on March My only disappointment was that I met a young couple outside the rear entrance looking for a space ticket. I didn't have one at the time, but said I'd see what I could do, but might take some time. Anyway a ticket materilised in 10 minutes, but when I went to seek them out I couldn't find them. I hope you got in. In the end the ticket did go to a good home when doors opened.

Ahhh Sam & Nico were amazing - do you think if I asked them nicely they'd come and live at my house and cook me up deconstructed folk tunes for every meal?

The show last night was completely amazing! Both my sister and I agreed after the show that at points it was just so immense and throughout your whole body that you almost can't take it (I'm not describing this well). And Thomas added an extra dimension, not only because of his musical editions (great whistling!!) but also because I felt it gave Owen someone else to bounce off.
I spent quite a while watching Owen's feet trying to work out what all the different buttons do. There's obviously a bunch that record looping, some that stop whats being looped, something that stops the violin pick up, something that makes the violin deeper? (surely the bass notes he plays are too low for a violin) and also the cool pedal he uses to control fading out. But other than that I'm stumped, he seemed to press buttons at points and couldn't notice what they were doing. Does anyone happen to know what any of the buttons do? I'm curious, as it all seems quite complicated, but at the sametime makes such amazing sounds.
The setlist posted at the top is pretty much right but missing he poos clouds and the great elsewhere. Also both Dev and Nico, Andy and Beth were also amazing.

AHHH Owen stole my heart last night, i got it back in the end...but wow!! what a perfect night!! Such an improvement from the last time he was at the Chapel...he walked right by like ten times, i wanted to grab him and say hi, but that'd be embarassing and he looked as if he was doing something important ha!
Anyways, thankyou Owen and Thomas for last night!!! Flare Gun was OFF THE HOOK!! I'm not a huge fan of the studio version, but live it has so much power. i got a funny action shot of Owen during Many Lives, i'll post it later...other highlights were the Great Elswhere (OMMMMMMMMMMGGGGG), The Dream Tree was beautiful, Keep the Dog Quiet was great! it seemed a bit hellish for a church, but it was awesome haha! I felt Thomas' mics were waaaayyy tooo low, as well as his guitar, which was dissapointing, i was really looking forward to hearing how different the set was with him, but it was pretty quiet most of the time, regardless, he still played excellently and had a lot of energy...AND OMG when Thats When The Audience started i legit jumped out of my seat a bit...wasn't the best song of the night, it was just great to see it live....
all in all it was a beautiful night, great to see a fellow Canadian, the opening acts were a great choice, Owen And Beth sounded really good together...thank you thank you thank you for the music and the experience and have an amazing tour!!

Did anyone else catch the shadows projected on the chapel walls by Owen and Thomas? During Lewis Takes Off His Shirt it looked like Owen's Shadow was beckoning something down from the sky. And Samamidon...I enjoyed him and Nico more than Owen, if I'm honest. If they ever play together again, I'll be there, wherever.
That aside, apologise to the people I kept bustling past and generally annoying by whispering and pointing things out to my friend. The whole night was great. Everyone was great.

What a MAGICAL night. Owen gets even better (if that's even possible)! It all went so fast though, I wish it could have been longer and he had time to play the whole of Heartland! What a lovely crowd too........I didn't hear any talking at all I wish I could box you all up and take you to every gig I go to

Yeah, one advantage of the union chapel is that people tend not to talk there. I remember getting really annoyed when I saw Owen at the forum a few years ago and people were talking lots. Here's Lewis Takes Off His Shirt that someone filmed: www.youtube.com/watch?v=AblViQS6cLU
