I suppose if he has to change the packaging of his previous work then it could be related to a legal issue from square-enix? They've gone a little mental with their new FF release (including having Leona Lewis sing the theme song) so it wouldn't suprise me.
Owen Pallett sounds really cool, anyway. I often refer to the music by that name anyway because everyone thinks I'm talking about the music from FF the game otherwise.

Owen mentioned that this Heartland is being released in places none of his releases have gone before. Perhaps copyright laws in one of these places could create a problem for Owen. Then again, you may be right. I mean, look at this thing, it's pretty much better than Modern Warfare 2. mega64.com/2009/12/03/final-fantasy-xiii-announcement/

I always liked the name, but if you can't use it you can't use it I guess. And like most of this forum I almost always refer to final fantasy as "that music Owen Pallett makes". So this should simplify things.

I don't know how I feel about this...
Sure, at the beginning I kind of got a kick out of the name, but as I got more and more into the music, it took on a whole new meaning. Final Fantasy isn't a videogame anymore, to me, it's a band from Toronto. Before, whenever I listened to Has A Good Home, I always associated the name with the videogame series, I enjoyed it's novelty, but now, whenever anyone mentions Final Fantasy, Owen Pallett is always the first thing to come to mind. Even if I go back to play those old games, they always make me think of his music.
I suppose I just never believed this day would ever come, yet here we are. It wont make me like the music any less, although I can't say the same for Square-Enix. It'll take me some time to go back to the old paradigm, where Final Fantasy was usually followed by roman numerals. On the plus side, if Heartland turns out to be a huge disappointment, then we can pretend it's a different band!

So this should simplify things. Agreed, and I always refer to him to friends as Owen, or Owen Pallett, because whenever I ask people if they've heard of Final Fantasy they always say "of course!" and then I say "no, the musician, not the game." I cannot count the number of times I've had that conversation.

As somebody who very serendipitously discovered your music because of the association with the video game series, I can't help but feel a twinge of sadness at the news. I am significantly more happy, however, about the implications of a broader and more international fanbase. The music takes precedence over any name, and I am 100% behind any decision that helps the music reach as many ears as possible. I am curious, though, if you perhaps revisited any of your old alternatives? We've discussed changing the band name. What do you think? Finally, Fantasy Pinal Pantasy Semifinal Fantasy, or Semiformal Fantasy The Man From F.I.N.A.L. Final Fantasy 1979 Test Icles Owen Birdwolf I'm a particular fan of Semiformal Fantasy myself

Aww Owen. I'm happy for you. you are now legally a worldwide rockstar. -on an ironic note, I now go by The Legend of Zelda. or Richie from The Legend of Zelda, to avoid confusion.

I say big props to the name drops.
Unlike that endless series of increasingly uninspiring video-games Owen chooses to acknowledge the name Final Fantasy suggests an eventual end.
I was looking forward to Vinyl Vanity tho...

So one could say, that Squeenix presents a large part of the Japanese market, and Owen doesn't want to offend...
I guess he's...afraid of Japan.
