Friends,
I began playing solo violin shows in 2004. Although it was essentially a solo project, I named the band Final Fantasy, as the experience–and the tone of the material–was reminiscent of the hours and hours I had spent as an adolescent playing those epic JRPGs.
But the laws of trademark infringement exist for good reason, and so I am voluntarily retiring my band name. In the new year, my record Heartland is coming out, and it is my first to be released in many territories, including Japan. With this in mind, I feel it is in my own best interests to definitively distinguish my music from Square/Enix’s games.
So, I am no longer playing shows as Final Fantasy. Subsequent releases, including Heartland, will be issued under my own name, Owen Pallett. Prior releases will sometime soon be re-packaged and re-issued.
I thank Square/Enix their kindness and support, and I thank you all for your understanding.
Salud!
Owen Pallett

I hope this marks the start of something new and amazing for you, I truly do. I've always used your name when recommending or talking about your work, to do anything else felt like I was detracting from all that you had achieved. At least now I can sing your praises without having to battle as to what to call you.
This means I am now looking forward to seeing Owen Pallett in Union chapel, rather than the Final Fantasy I saw earlier this year XD Welcome to the world, you now stand alone, free from comparison, unique in every way.

Will you feel more pressure to write "better" material now that you are using your own name?

Good luck forging paths with your own name, Owen!
How long has this been in the works? Spectrum, 14th Century and Plays to Please were a bit more than a year ago, and both of those were under the Final Fantasy name...and in the first case contained a reference to it in "The Butcher." I guess that's a lot of time to continue the recording process, think about the worth of a name.
If the name represented a call back to the power of those games, then would this be a sort of...maturation? In playing the games one was sucked into a fantasy universe with its casts of characters, brilliant plots and settings, and huge emotional arcs, possibly in a more active way than just reading about such a world (when the games were at their peak...). Link's Awakening had a similar sort of arc for me, which is why it clicked to hear those references in "He Poos Clouds." But now you've done it yourself, you made Spectrum.
Anyway, now I can do as I have been able to do: not have my gamer friends change the subject whenever I mention your music. Sadness: will you and Thomas no longer be OwenfromFinalFantasy and ThomasfromFF? What about the board name!

That's crazy! Although I have always switched between saying "Owen Pallett" and "Final Fantasy" in conversations, and no one ever knew what I was talking about (well... I don't suppose anyone knew what I'm talking about anyway, but this will make it a lot easier.)
Also, repackaged and re-issued? Oh man. I might buy duplicate copies of all the FF branded cds I already own, because mine are pretty scratched and 'used', just so I have pristine collection of the old-name cds - you know, for when you're super famous and they're rare. Then buy them all again with the new branding, of course.

Will you feel more pressure to write "better" material now that you are using your own name? That would be quite impossible.

I do think it's a good idea, for what my thoughts are worth. I always find it difficult explaining what exactly Final Fantasy is when someone asks, not due to potential RPG confusion (that FF is probably less well known in my expirience) but...do I say "it's-a-band-but-there-is-only-one-person-in-the-band"? Do I say "it's-a-guy-who-calls-himself-that-thing-but-is-Owen-Pallet-IRL"? Do I say "solo music project", and cringe because I sound like that PC jerk in middle-management?
Owen Pallet is much better, and the change is hardly worth talking about. The main reason I've typed so much is because my hands feel like ice, and I want to get warm before heading back out into snow-smothered Sussex tonight.

HAH! snow covered...psh tosh!! go to Canada and see if you still think its snow covered...
But yeah, I do agree that Owen Pallett is better! I think it's easier for people to get, and comes across as a more mature/serious musician...Well to me atleast! Now when I tell people I listen to Owen Pallett they won't be under the impression that I listen to video game scores...XD

HAH! snow covered...psh tosh!! go to Canada and see if you still think its snow covered... It's all relative ser. While we don't get as much snow as other places we are less well prepared for it, and incurably lazy. Thus, half the county takes the day off because they fear that if their toes vanish into the deep white after the first step, they might be lost entirely on the second. Having said that, I made it to work this winter and the last, proving that at least a few of us are as brave as everyone else in the world.

I liked the Final Fantasy name. Is the change mainly due to "the laws of trademark infringement," or is it a personal preference as well? For if it's a personal preference, that's fine. If it's not, I find it a bit sad. And I think that what unicornmagic says about that it makes you come across as a more mature/serious musician is nonsense. I think the Final Fantasy name came across as sort of controversial. A name like that will provoke strong bias from a lot of people - I've experienced that from my own friends. The fact that you've managed to build a large and growing fanbase despite of that, I think is a great achievment in itself.

Ho Hum... I'll miss the name, but not the looks I get when people ask me where I'm off too. I mean I work for a software company so people think I'm a geek already..Okay maybe I am. Anyway it's just a name, the person and the music go on and in many ways I've always wanted you to just be Owen Pallett. I hope the initial release of Heartland is still under the Final Fantasy name though and then I'll buy all the re-packaged stuff as well. I think I might change my name to someone else as well ... no done that one already
