for any of you that read "the georgia straight", you'll find in their "music notes" section a small blurb that does abbotsford's local scene an incredible disservce. If the big boys of vancouver would realize there's anything past boundry road, they'd realize that we're doing just fine out here. get a copy of the straight, read what i'm talking about, it's the "suburban sonic assult". the fact that they'd think we've still got nothing going on out here is a sham. it discredits the burlesque house, the gypsy hotel, the haven and every band that has ever come out of this town.
"i tell ya, it's one big fucking joke"

yeah, this is lame:
Music Notes Music Notes Archives Suburban Sonic Assualt By shawn conner, john lucas, and mike usinger Publish Date: 3-Jun-2004
Abbotsford isn't usually the first place bands think of when they're booking gigs. On any given night, however, the Fraser Valley community is crawling with young people who have (to paraphrase Joey Ramone) nothing to do and nowhere to go. Rectifying that is the concept behind an all-ages punk show set to take place at the Abbotsford Senior Association Hall next Saturday (June 12). The lineup features acts from all over the valley and the Lower Mainland, including the Retreads from Vancouver, Surrey's Onesteptrip, Chilliwack's New World on Fire, and Abby's own Sans Nathaniel. Concert organizer Colin Richardson lives in White Rock, but he told the Straight he spends a lot of time with friends in Abbotsford and would like to see the all-ages-music scene there take off. If the June 12 concert is a success, he hopes other acts will take notice and trek to the valley for gigs. "There's just no bands that are willing to go out there," he said. "I think there's definitely the fan base for it."

i encourage everyone who is pissed off by this to write the georgia straight and tell them so.
my favourite part is how the guy who's going to save our scene doesn't even live in abbotsford.
not only does this column discredit every band that has come out of this town, but every person who has contributed to the scene and worked to build it up as a community.

hopefully this will get printed next week...
Dear Payback Time: Though I understand that Abbotsford does not typically stand out as “the first place bands think of when they’re booking gigs,” I was one of many people to take deep offense at the entirely uninformed nature of last week’s “Suburban Sonic Assault” article. For the past three years, I have been actively involved with a group of at least ten other people who book shows for touring bands and have started many successful bands within the Abbotsford community. We have put on shows in basements (such as the now legendary Burlesque House or the Gypsy Hotel), halls, coffee shops, and church basements (the Haven is a venue that my brother and I were involved with creating, and is a non-profit venue run out of a church basement in Abbotsford). Over the years we have put on shows for a number of well-known local acts including The WPP, the Blackjacks, Three Inches of Blood, Spreadeagle, The Accident, The Widows, The New Town Animals, Removal, Mr. Plow, and End This Week With Knives. Our own bands have made some achievements themselves. The Progressive Thinker, who have now broken up, ran the Burlesque House, and were even asked to have Pretty Girls Make Graves come play in Abbotsford shortly before they were evicted and forced to stop having shows. Members of that band have now formed You Say Party! We Say Die! who have been playing countless shows in the lower mainland and are gearing up to tour across Canada this summer. Fun 100 (who have even received mention in Thrasher Magazine) released a split-ep with The Hand in 2003. These two bands have worked hard for the last two and a half years, playing shows all over the northwest and appearing on Citr and CBC Radio. Fun 100 are played on CBC Radio so frequently that they have been asked for inclusion on an upcoming compilation they are releasing. Howard Redekop, who has worked with the New Pornographers and 54-40, recorded the song they are planning to include. Both bands are gearing up to play numerous dates across Canada and in the States this summer. It is quite clear that Shawn Connor, John Lucas, and Mike Usinger put very little effort into writing this absurd article, using facts given to them by some dude from White Rock and one of Abbotsford’s youngest bands, Sans Nathaniel (who have allegedly covered songs by Fun 100 and The Hand without due credit). The fact that three people collaborated to write such a completely ignorant article wreaks of laziness, and is utterly pathetic. -Josiah Hughes

Even if I don't really like Abbotsford and everything... that's tough guys.
The worst part of all is... Sans Nathaniel blows.

What I meant to say is that you shouldn't let a publication that is quickley losing it's credibility put a damper on your accomplishments.

hey guys i totaly agree with with you guys that the article was way off. many abotsford bands and individuals have left huge possitive effects to our scene as a whole.one of favorite shows of all time was at the gypsy with the hand, chuck norris, wailing corpse, artax, and us. it was so rad to see the crasy energy at a house show like that.everyboby there was so awsome and friendly. dont worry to much about one guy thinks it dosent realy matter. "opinions are like a morning shit. everyones has them and they are worth abuot the same"
