I know the forum's focus on Kishi Bashi is mixed and past, but it looks like he's touring again. I saw him when he came to Vancouver a few months ago and he absolutely blew my mind, it was definitely one of my favourite shows, and his energy is off the hook. I don't know how anyone could fail to enjoy a live performance of his. When I have a minute I'm going to check out that opener, his previous opener The Last Bison was exceptional Kishi Bashi +The Last Bison --> Atticus in the Desert.

Guys? Does anybody know any good resources about gender variant stuff that would be helpful for loved ones of gender variant folks to read? Starting to get increasingly more terrified of going 'home' for the holidays...Also really sick of being dismissed. (though I'm aware being dismissed seems to presently be a fact of life for us v_v)

It depends so much on who the reader is. Like, a friend of mine gave her mother Julia Serano's Whipping Girl and that worked out, I don't think I ever could've done that. A technical reader who really wants to get into the "why is this a thing" might benefit from Susan Stryker's Transgender History. My mother benefitted greatly from Jennifer Boylan's memoir She's Not There. Of the wealth of articles out there about trans people, one of the ones that sucks the least is " The Transgender Athlete" from Sports Illustrated, which may be helpful even if you're no athlete. Lana Wachowski, Laura Jane Grace, and Chaz Bono are probably the three biggest trans personalities in American media right now, I don't know if there would be any relatability there. Part of the problem is that is that no text is perfect. Some of the ones that work best I disagree with so deeply, and some of the ones I agree with are too technical or out-there to work (Stryker's work is such). Definitely read anything before you give it. I think best-case scenario is to have a medical professional who's on your side talk to someone. They tend to have not only the background knowledge but the relatable language, as well as the air of "professionalism." I'm out to my nuclear family, which went frustratingly with my parents (particularly with my mother) and very well with my sister. My parents came around, and my sister was wonderfully supportive up until she passed over the summer. I refuse to come out to my maternal grandparents, because there's such a difference in language that it would only distance me from them in their age; I can still be loving, open, and close with them even if I'm hiding physical features. The vast majority of my extended family I want out of my life, and so I don't care who knows and who doesn't.

Oh goodness, yes I would read anything first. I just wanted to know if there were specific websites or articles that somebody found really helpful that I could check out and pass on if they were applicable to my family and i. I have found a couple of trans glossaries of terms which have been pretty great, and some that i found were weirdly dehumanizing. My parents already know but my dad really wants to try and understand better so he can be as supportive as possible, but my mom doesn't want to understand or believe it. I'll check these suggestions out and see what else I find. Thank you! if anyone else has anymore suggestions for websites or articles, pass them along.

There's some good resources that are pretty digestible from the fabulous organisation I conducted my dissertation research with: www.scottishtrans.org/ If you want I can pop over to Edinburgh and ask if they know any good books to read because they're some of the most helpful and lovely people you could ever hope to meet. I think I have a pdf of whipping girl, it's an ok read, at first I was going to suggest Judith Butler with Gender Trouble but she's a complete nightmare to understand to anyone who hasn't studied gender theory for the last 6 years... If you want I can send you a copy of my dissertation because I melt down most of her/foucault's post-structuralist theories on why most modern conceptualisations of gender are problematic and make it more accessible to a variety of audiences? I also know a few good trans communities on tumblr which my academic hero Jenny conducted her phd on which is heartwarming to read to say the least, i'll ask her if she has a copy to send to me which I can send to you?

Thanks Paul! I'll check out the website. Also, the dissertation sounds like it could be a good idea. My mom likes you. I'm sure your words could be potentially easier for her to understand.

I always thought the Wachowski brothers just had a little sister who was following in their footsteps but had previously never directed anything.

I'm just curious. I think it's gross that a photoset on fetlife with "die cis scum" will be taken down as hatespeech when shemale is an acceptable fetish group on the site.

Okay. Sorry about the previous self-promotion. Distasteful of me, especially in such a selfless place.
(but honestly, how are we to be heard in such a noisy & busy world?)
Happy New Years you guys! I'm pretty excited about all the things '13 has in store for us all!

I don't have much to say about 2012 apart from it has been a strangely sad year considering all of the things that happened which should have been so amazing. The new year is after all just another day, but if it's an excuse for some kind of change in mental attitude then that is something that I want and need, and I have no qualms in subscribing to it. Happy new year, everyone. Every step is moving me up!
