How do you classify xiu xiu.. or, how do you explain what xiu xiu sounds like to friends? I seem to always go with Avant-Experimental .. but that never seems to fit perfectly.
And don't say you're anti label, because that's just lame.

i usually say "theres not really a way to describe it" because i cant think of how to say it or i use zac pennington's "it sounds like an open wrist" because i think thats very appropriate.

I usually say "do you remember what it felt like when your grandma died? that's what it sounds like."
i like the "open wrist" comparison more though.

i like to tell people that it was once described as "the smiths having a rave in a sewer" and then play a song for them (i always have my mp3 player with me).

meh, i dont think it matters much. classification doesn't always help when youre trying to convey the sound of a group to someone, its best just to play it for them most of the time.

i usually just tell people it's similar to dark 80's pop bands like joy division or the smiths, but with a bit of asian inspired percussion and drawings of ot era neubauten experimentation

Because they won't understand what I mean. Now, do you ease them in? like play something from Fabulous Muscles? or do you throw them in and make them listen to "Pink City" or "Don Diasco"?

"whatthefuckcore" is my usual genre when people ask me about it. Usually I'll just burn them A Promise and let them figure it out.

i usually play "i broke up" as the first song, since it was the first song i heard, and i still think of it as a perfect example of their sound
