with all of this elephant bashing, i feel the need to point out that it was written by JT Leroy (or whoever it really is... this hoax stuff is funny)... he (she?) is a prose writer, so for a first script, it's not a terrible film... but yeah, i found elephant pretty boring as well, and i love Leroy's novel

hm, i was under the impression that elephant didnt even have a script. i read somewhere that every scene's dialogue was improv.

I love the idea of a xiu xiu musical. It would be like RENT but with more rape, disease, sodomy, and everything truly horrible. I think it would sell out in SoHo for sure.

yes, everything ive read points to it being improv. so i dont really know if i by that, doesnt JT Leroy write trashy romance/murder novels? apparently leroy wrote the intial script, but most of the dialogue was improvised... of course, with the recent allegations against leroy (there's an article in NY magazine that claims leroy is actually a literary hoax), i don't know what to believe according to leroy's website: "LeRoy is the extremely reclusive, San Francisco-based boy wonder who wrote the first draft of Gus Van Sant's Palme d'Or winner, "Elephant." Though Van Sant discarded the script before principal photography began, he gave an associate producer credit to LeRoy, and vestiges of the script remain in the HBO film, which is a "Rashoman"-style dissection of a high school massacre. There's a violent videogame sequence and a scene involving a girl tormented by her peers in gym class -- both originally from LeRoy's pen. " and no, leroy doesn't write trashy romance/murder novels... his first novel, sarah is a quasi fairy tale about a 14 year-old boy/girl prostitute (transgendered isn't quite the right word)... his second book is a collection of autobiographical stories about living with his mother, who was a prostitute and speed adict; it was recently made into a movie, directed by asia argento... he's also written a bunch of short stories, mostly dealing with child prostitution and poverty in the south...

John's right about Happiness. The last conversation between the father and son made my heart fall to my feet, much to the same effect Xiu Xiu has on me. Another pretentious director who could use Xiu Xiu: Harmony Korine. Has anyone here ever seen any of Harmony Korine's work and heard the music he uses in them? Gummo was basically a soundtrack full of Norwegian Death Metal with some Roy Orbison thrown in and Julien DB was compiled of a few of those old recordings of his grandmother's. I was afraid this thread would turn out this way.
