John's right about Happiness. The last conversation between the father and son made my heart fall to my feet, much to the same effect Xiu Xiu has on me. Another pretentious director who could use Xiu Xiu: Harmony Korine. RIGHT, MIRANDAAA? and elephant *smiles at brilliant filmmaking* i think we both love harmony equally. but i know he's definitely not pretentious. he's the anti pretentious. he is ROCK AND ROLL.

i think of harmony korine as an immature todd solondz, but i mean that in the nicest way possible... i really loved gummo
as for palindromes, it's good, but i would only hunt it down if you've seen the other three (happiness, welcome to the dollhouse, and storytelling) first... oh, and as for his first movie (fear, anxiety, depression), don't bother... it's awkward fun, but really only for pretentious theatre geeks and hardcore solondz fans

Palindromes is in my Netflix queue. I want to see it because I am a hardcore Solondz fan. I need to find Welcome to the Dollhouse on DVD. I bought the VHS from a local video store when it closed down. Doesn't Dawn Weiner kill herself in Palindromes?
Maybe they should make a musical using only Xiu Xiu songs; they did it with the Smiths.

Doesn't Dawn Weiner kill herself in Palindromes? she kills herself before the film begins; the first scene of the film is a shaky hand-held shot of her funeral... when i saw it in the theatre, audience members were actually crying... it's amazing how attached so many people became to dawn over the years; but i guess as underdogs go in film, she is one of the most loveable apparently, solondz wanted heather mattazaro (sp? i'm too lazy to look it up) to come back for the film, but she refused, afraid it would completely typecast her and ruin her career (since princess diaries was such a fuckin masterpiece)... as you can see, i am also a HUGE todd solondz fan

Harmony Kornine is pretty awesome, his movies disturb the fuck out of me. Gummo was really well done. Julien Donkey Boy creeped me out, but was strangely attractive.
Not so arthouse but if Vincent Gallo had some xiu xiuish music in his movies it would be alot better to watch.

harmony korine to movies is like the rolling stones and daniel johnston and xiu xiu to music for me.
but i think i'm the only one that can't see a good match with xiu xiu's music and harmony's movies.
although i can see harmony putting the stones or johnston's music in one of his movies. but not xiu xiu. i don't know why. i just can't see it.

I feel the need to defend Elephant as well. The way Van Sant handles the violence is brilliant. One of the more memorable comtemporary films I've seen.

One of the more memorable comtemporary films I've seen. im not saying van sant sucks as a whole, i enjoy good will hunting a lot actually, of course i havent seen his writing/directing films so i suppose thats a problem, but elephant was just terrible all around, everyone makes bad movies.

elephant had absolutely every teenage stereotype on the planet, the artsy kid, that apparently doesn't go to any other class but photgraphy the black guy that has two words of dialogue then gets shot the good kid with the rough upbringing the evil guys who play violent video games and have homosexual encounters etc. etc.
also with harmony korine movies I agree that xiu xiu and he have a similar aesthetic but they really shouldn't go together, maybe if jamie did instrumentals specifically for the project it might work
