this is a radical opinion, and i'm expecting to get heat for it.
but seriously. to me.
politics + music DON'T GO TOGETHER.
i really hate it when rock bands or any musician write about politics.

art and social change are inseparable. the fact that much of the political art out there is poor is the fault of many artists who attach themselves naively to political causes they know only the most superficial amount about. however it is arguably the most important function of all art/music. the difficult part is making large issues personal.
system of a down is still a crap band

I feel that some xiu xiu songs have political undertones, expecially support our troops black angels. And I dont know if they had this at your show, but they were giving out left wing packets/pamphlets and other political things at the xiu xiu show I attended. and to everyone else: way to be a bunch of douchebags. please try and put out your opinions in a better way, saying "CRAPPPP" or "they suck" doesnt really add to the conversation. And if you think they suck, say why. and also, there was another section to my post: what do you think of their political affiliations.

system of a down have written some pretty hot songs. yes, they're on a major label. yes, all the kids like them. yes, hipsters take offense to that.

they suck.
and the reason we dont have to be nice about it is because its a xiu xiu board. (slightly sarcastic...slightly)
and also--not all 'hipsters' are elitists. bjork's sold a google more albums than soad and i love her to death. radiohead the same--theyre my absolute favorite band. dont be so vicious--at least we didnt make personal attacks.

and another thing:
popularity ISSS generally a useful attribute in determining the suckiness of an artist/group of musicians because any art that is so universally appealing to the vast diversity of human experience is almost necessarily less personal than that art that isnt. (there ARE exceptions--see above)
furthermore, the great cogs of the 'industry' are stifling to radical unbridled creativity because the majority of the higher-ups of that industry are not progressive, radical youth (youth NOT the key word--but those attributes are typically--in western cultures--associated with it) but rather middle-aged businessman very shrewd at what they do, which is why they have advanced as far as they have. its like ANY bureacracy--big government, political parties, giant corporations, large colleges/universities--the larger it is the more self-interested it becomes (self-interest in this case=profit=universal appeal=depersonalization.)
MOST people (here comes the elitism haha) are not interested in music as Art. they dont want to sit in a room and listen for the tiny nuances; they dont have the patience to wade through whole albums to discern larger themes; they dont have the fortitude to endure unfamiliarity and find it easier to label something as "weird" and be done with it. they dont have the intelligence/education/patience/time to mull over the tenets of an allegory or the subtleties of a lyrical metaphor. this is not to say its their fault--but it is the reality.
people are more interested in music as wallpaper than as Art. ever listen to smooth jazz? hahaha
anyway--im done ranting--but i do get upset at the "you are all elitists" excuse to explain away tastes for the unfamiliar ("weird") or avant-garde.
boo-hoo
