La Foret Xiu Xiu Reviewed by Timothy Gunatilaka
Unquestionably unconventional, these indie darlings from San Jose, Calif., Xiu Xiu, once again bring an uncanny poignancy to their chorus of chaos on their fourth full-length, La Forêt. ''Pox'' and ''Muppet Face'' set Jamie Stewart's plaintive whisper and delicate acoustic strums to a cacophony of lo-fi synths, kitchenware clangs, and otherworldly blips and whirls for an experience that's at times quaintly dreamy, at others spastically nightmarish. What is with all the Bright Eyes comparisons? Is their musical knowledge that limited that they can't think of any other band to compare Xiu Xiu to? I really don't understand it.

while i agree that the bright eyes comparisons are a bit off, i have noticed that a lot of xiu xiu fans seem to like bright eyes, or at least, did before their recent popularity... just like a lot of xiu fans seem to be enamored with neutral milk hotel... maybe it has something to do with the vocal delivery?

yes, i mean, i can see a fan connection to both bands, but musically theres absolutely nothing there, ive read two reviews so far of 'la foret' where they make that comparison and it really makes no sense

i think the vocal thing the other guy was talking about is right. the comparisons are at least valid in that light; artists who have very distinct powerful and shocking voices. i liked bright eyes' early work and was a huge fan. i was a huge fan of early at the drive in. i love carey mercer. bjork, the magnetic fields, neutral milk hotel, i could go on forever.

The vocal are fairly similar, between the raspy, the wavery, and the whisper. And I am a big fan of both bands, so the connection goes. I'm glad it got in. Lets hear it for La Foret!

If memory serves me correctly, they were also recently in the New York Times.

i have noticed that a lot of xiu xiu fans seem to like bright eyes my two favourite bands...both conor and jamie seem to pour their heart and soul into what they're singing...

I don't really understand that comparasion either.
But they are both very emotional bands.

Vocally, Jamie reminds me more of a stuttering, breathless Morrissey.

If you hear a slight spat and light moans, that would be jamie after reading you said that
