someone mentioned zoviet france... YES! by far one of the most brilliant early experimental bands... also, one of the guys who worked with them early on left and formed the group dead voices on air (DVOA)
i also second the suggestions of young people and deerhoof

What I'm seeing is a lot of albums critics like. The best thing for you to do is to buy albums at random. Seriously. Just buy albums on cover art or band name or song titles. Of course you'll get duds, but you'll get duds anyway.

I would say that if you're into xiu xiu, you'd probably appreciate deerhoof. I belive Jamie Stewart contributed to one of the albums, Revile I think. I don't have the discs with me right now, anyone know what the extent of Jamie's involvement was? Also for further connection, I think I read on this board one time that Deerhoof's drummer played on Hives Hives. He's a great drummer! More than all that though, the two bands both seem really genuine, putting _expression_ over grace/fashionability/anything else... or that's how I hear them anyway. _lester

Jamie produced Reveille by Deerhoof. I've never heard it, but I like Deerhoof's new one and their first one. It's not for everyone the girl's vocals are very high pitched and can get annoying. It's not music I want to listen to all the time.
Hey, just a thought - why don't Xiu Xiu post new bands they find out about? Like a brief album description and what not? Yes, no?

Whoops!
I meant Xiu Xiu FANS should post new music they find. Didn't mean to put Jamie on the spot like that!
But a band I know Jamie likes that has a cool new album out is Kill Me Tomorrow. Their new album, 'the Garbage Man and the Prostitute' is kind of a mix between sonic youth and xiu xiu and west coast noise bands. I like the lyrics. They have a website, killmetomorrow.com with one FANTASTIC song called liason on it.
Other new music I found that I like a lot is The Double's new album 'Palm Fronds'. It sounds weird, there are definite elements of Walkmen, MBV but it has a more home recorded solo-artist feel. It's really good. I've been listening to it a lot lately. I found it at othermusic.com. I haven't seen any reviews of it yet...
The new Fog EP Hummer is also great. As was the album he did with Why from cLOUDDEAD: Hymie's Basement (which NO ONE reviewed?).
Actually, if people here like Xiu Xiu they might like Fog if you haven't already heard him.
Young People are pretty good. Still waiting for them to get their shit together and make a really good record.
The Dead Science, Dirty Projectors, I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness, Chromatics, and TV on the Radio are also really good.
Everything else that's good has been mentioned to death. I agree that you should buy an album if you like the coverart. Ironically, I almost did that with Reveille many moons ago...see? I should've jsut bought it! That's how I found the Microphones and Xiu Xiu to begin with!

i highly reccomend these bands: legendary pink dots(LPD kicks too much ass) skinny puppy tear garden psychic TV pluxus black heart prosession well, since tear garden is really just lpd meets skinny puppy (band member wise), if you like either band, you'll probably like tear garden... also, if you like current 93 (i'm still shocked that pitchfork reveiewed them recently...), check out death in june... douglas pierce has the most amazing voice, and to me, DiJ are really the kings of the "apocalyptic folk" genre... however, current 93's "gothic love song" and "crowleymass" are still hilarious and worth checking out
