the obvious choice as the most controversial track, i was wondering how everyone is responding to this? being a theatre person, i think i'm biased about the speeches and would love to hear what others are thinking

"Oh wait, you totally did know" cracks me up.
Not really one for politics in music, so whatever, but even outside of that, they work.

the sonics on this track are straight dope. the sonic quality of this track is incredible, but i'm more interested in the way the auditory landscape interacts with the speeches. the attack of a figure that many americas are currently placing into sainthood is of course a gutsy move (although many will call it pretentious, and possibly for good reason). i find it interesting that jamie has not only decided to make a political statement, but that he has done it in such a blatant, disturbed moment that mirrors more personal moments in other pieces (think ian curtis wishlist or i broke up). and that "oh wait, you totally did know" line is hilarious. i think my real ambiguity towards this track comes from the fact that he has taken his previous scathing internal focus and turned it towards a non-internal political issue. yet at the same time, he attacks someone for their lack of humanity, which is definately something that exists in his other work... ok, i've rambled enough on the topic for now... later

i would have liked it more if it wasnt spoken.
in my book that makes it sound too self righteous

i'll think more about the content later.. but right now i'm wondering..
anyone else notice a possible connection to "when you write (black angels version)" by ten in the swear jar?? the black angels in parantheses shows up there to. however the song is competely different stylistically and contentwise. coincidence? or a connection?
any thoughts for someone who's heard the titsj version?
ps: "when you write" is great and i'm hoping the trend of xiu xiu remakes continues with this song (and famine (1949 version), that song's even better!!!)

i'm also REALLY curious to hear what devendra banhart will do with this "song" when he covers it on that supposed split that he and jamie are supposed to be doing!

If the words in this song did not disgust you, then you are as ignorrant as he is. His words reflect his HATRED for another GROUP of people. I thought our country was trying to move beyond that.
Guess not..

the reason I find this song so powerful isn't the fact about what he's saying, I mean, that's just anti-war rambling that you hear everywhere these days. What comes through for me is the absolute disillusionment and fear that Jamie is feeling when he says it. It's irrelevant whether or not what he's talking about is actually happening, but the fact that he thinks it just represents the total failure of America (and most of the world really... sadly enough) to provide comfort to its people.
I dunno, it's just so hateful and the 'why should I care if you get killed' gets me everytime

Guess not.. i completely disagree... i don't feel that he is stating hatred for another group of people, but rather, a very strong and understandable disgust at horrors perpetuated by one group of people on another... and to say that this country is trying to move beyond hatred is an asinine statement... just look at all the hate groups that exist here, or consider the fact that our current administration is actively attempting to add a discriminatory amendment to the constitution... oh, and one more thing... misspelling the word "ignorant" when attempting to attack another person is probably a bad idea...

i love the track, but just like the blanket statement that all arabs are terorists, saying that every single person in the military is just a jock who wants to kill things is retarded. there definitely some that are, but there are many others who are not.
did i mention i still love the track?
