Hey gang, long time no see.
Not sure if any of you heard, but the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Finnish Violinist Pekka Kuusisto will be Debuting Owen Pallett's Violin Concerto on March 7th, 2013, assuming the Incan apocalypse is not imminent.
Here's a video of Owen talking to Pekka about Shepard tones and such:

Great to see it aired again, its one of my 2012 highlights. Be really nice for a proper recording to be made available, because 3rd rate bootlegs aren't the real deal.

Really fascinating to hear a bit more about this. Also I want to hear that Pharrell interview, that sounds like a fun project. Great to see it aired again, its one of my 2012 highlights. Be really nice for a proper recording to be made available, because 3rd rate bootlegs aren't the real deal. I second this! |

TSOundcheck has a 2 for 1 deal for this concert right now. That's 2 tickets for $14! I went ahead and bought 2 tickets, and so far have no one to go with. So if anyone in the Toronto Area wants to see this for $7, let me know. The ticket is for the 'Mezzanine - Mid Centre and Sides', and will go to the first available person to respond who isn't Owen Pallett.

It would be an honour to go with the curator of my favourite website! I believe it starts at 7:30 but we have to be there at 7:00 to get tickets. You also have to be under 30 I think, or have the appropriate fake id. I will pm you my cell number the week of the concert.

An Amateur, the piece you brought up, Welcome to Kelowna, I just listened to it and it reminds me of both Tod Machover's piece (45 Beatles songs... 40 commercial jingles) and Kryštof Mařatka's piece (the spoken vocals at 2:24, I don't know what they reference). Owen, a Globe and Mail article describes you as "high-functioning". Wow. |

That Globe article tried to describe me as compromising AND uncompromising, arrogant AND humble, talented AND overrated and misused words like "prodigy" and so on and so on, I just did one of these:  and have tried to forget about it. The author confessed to be before we began that he'd never been to a classical concert before, or a new music concert, let alone a rehearsal, so I can't imagine that he'd have any comprehension of the high stress, exciting thing it is to be hearing an ensemble play a piece for the first time at the first rehearsal. Anyway, bad article, and I feel sorry for the author for being put into an alien situation. |

Nico Muhly started off by "not reading his press" and then went one step further, "not reading any Arts reporting". He tended to vent his frustrations more explosively than I do-- he feels things deeply and I think that is a quality in a person.
Me, I don't know whether I'm a glutton for punishment (or a secret bottom) but I'd much rather sit down with the writer and hash it out. Unless there are some hilarious zings-- which is the raison d'etre of arts reporting as far as I'm concerned-- I have no capacity for non-compassion in arts reporting and I'll call you out if you're hurtful.

I wasn't sure whether to link the article because it's offensive, but in this case the article isn't even really about you, it's about the writer trying really hard to make a unifying point out of a bunch of unrelated quotes. Like instead of simply reporting what you said, he infers that when you compliment Pekka Kuusisto's musicality, you're actually complimenting yourself, which is disingenuous regardless of how familiar he is with classical music. You could be very arrogant (I don't know you personally), but the evidence given to support that is a stretch.
I think the raison d'etre of arts reporting is to report about art. How reporters choose to report is going to vary a lot.
