Wow, Neu! and Virginia Astley I haven't thought about in a long time. I've been listening to music lately and happenned on this forum. Thanks for the Wilco direction. It's hard for me to figure your parameters of vocals and density of music. I like meandering songs, more rhythm and chord change. Some of these are foreign - be forgiving on English lyrics. Here's some stuff I like:
Tortoise TNT (post-rock, no vocals) must be only this album by them for me.
Idaho (slowcore), try "reminder". I only know the newest album and his first Year after Year.
Mew (heavier) - And the Glass Handed Kites (crunchier cohesive album) or Frengers (pop singles starting with Am I Wry, No)
Mum (icelandic lo-fi twee) Green Grass or Yesterday Was Dramatic
His Name is Alive - (my favorite back in the day) Mouth By Mouth
Kings of Convenience - (easy to relax to) any album
Mouse on Mars (electronic, no vocals)- Niun Niggung
The Church (more straightforward) - Priest=Aura
Kate Bush - (for a challenge) The Dreaming
Air -(candy) Talkie Walkie
Swirlies -(shoegazer) Blonder Tongue Audio Baton
Tones on Tail
Legendary Pink Dots - (is my goth side showing?) Shadow Weaver pt 1, it's on bandcamp. legendarypinkdots1.bandcamp.com/album/shadow-weaver-2012-remaster
if you like this, there's a whole world to find. I'm not sure why this album comes to mind to compare to Heartland. Most accessible songs by them are Belladonna from the Maria Dimension and I love you in your tragic beauty www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwU27t2DHcw&feature=related
if you pref the baroque pop how abt The Divine Comedy - new one Bang Goes the Knighthood is supposed be good, Regeneration is nice www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnlLhq1kW10
The National - Boxer
Juana Molina might work for some Owen fans
Dead Can Dance? Varttina? Swans, The The
Lately I listen to Owen, Mew, & Toumani Diabate. When I found Owen's music I also was listening to Agnes Obel, Anna Calvi, Broken Social Scene, & Royksopp's Senior...but as you can tell I spent my money in the 90s. Here's a longshot - Tears For Fears- The Seeds of Love.
