hello everyone, this is my first post... here goes:
Having been inspired to pick up the violin by Mr. Pallett's music, I have been spending my summer teaching myself the basics before I go back to school and have music professors and private instructors at my disposal for free.
Anyways, I have been fiddling *pun* around with some different bow holds, and cant seem to find one that fits me. however, I have been watching loads of videos of Owen (and Patrick Wolf too) and they all seem to use a bow hold that has the hand much further up the stick than I have seen in any of the books I've been reading up on the subject.
any comments?

typically, one holds the bow further up for fast pieces or fiddling as it can allow for more/better control, but, just mess around with it and you'll find what works for you.

I'm no expert, but I was always taught to just let your hand go "limp",wrist straight and the bow should fit happily in that position with the little finger as the main balancer.

Having the bow high up there is actually a pretty Baroque thing. I'm not sure if that's unintentional or intentional by Owen. Bow hold is deceptively complex, I guess the most important thing is having a loose wrist and a loose hold (I tend to hold on too tight for fear of dropping it).
You should really have a private instructor check it out, though.

Yeah for real I drop my bow way more than a plectrum, odd, they bounce!
