What on earth was going on there? Absolute dive, I'm afraid to say, then the venue's tape being all heavy metal, then that THRASH band... my goodness me.
Owen was very good as always and the boy who played with him... don't know who he is but they seemed to have fun together and I enjoyed the interplay. It's always a different experience each time I see Owen, but this time the night overall was absolutely bizarre.

Ha! I don't know if you got to a tonne of gigs in the UK but that room was par for the course. Personally, I love those rooms, designed and created for Babyshambles and their ilk. I wasn't being sarcastic from the stage. It makes going to a show feel like visiting a prostitute. Hooray.
As for Next Life. I am surrounded my wonderful people who make my touring and recording life possible. I make an effort to allow everybody to have their say and make their decisions. Taking Next Life as support was not my idea, but I stand behind it fully. They are easily the best metal band I've ever seen and it is a pleasure and an honour to share the stage with them.

Have to say that Cardiff was a great gig. Owen was in a expansive mood and although the set was slightly short than the Koko one the following night it was longer because Owen had lots to say about the Mafia, Venues and Wild Thing.
Next Life was different and I can see why some would be bemused by the choice, but why not.. we need to be exposed to all types of music and actually if you focus in you can get it. One of my favorite records of last year was Sunn O))) - Monoliths & Dimensions. I'd have never gone near it if it hadn't been for Stephen O'Malley playing at Maximum Black.
Anyway.. here's the setlist
E Is For Estranged This is the Story of Win and Regine The Man With No Ankles That's When The Audience Died Midnight Directives Flare Gun The Butcher He Poos Clouds Lewis Takes Action Independence Is No Solution Keep The Dog Quiet /Mt Alpertine The Great Elsewhere Many Lives - 49 MP Lewis Takes Off His Shirt ------------------------------------------ CN Tower Sweet Fantasy

Mr Thomas Gill of Toronto, who has a rather fine CD not for sale on the tour because he sold out already (despite Owen giving it a plug in Birmingham).

Oh and on Next Life. I took my daughter to the Birmingham show and after putting in ear plugs said she could listen to the support act, but if she didn't enjoy it we could beat a retreat to sanctuary. Half way through the set, I whispered in her ear ("Are you okay or do you want to go elsewhere"). She was fine and at the end of the set made me get here a copy of the album (which the band kindly signed for her) and said it was great.
I've had it explained to me by a learned musician that this kind on music appeals to younger people. I've yet to copy the disc to her ipod but I've listened to it and its really good stuff, so I guess mental age must count as well.
I think they bemused some people, as did the choice of venues after the shows last year, but the venue make a difference to the type of performance. Birmingham and Cardiff where both much more relaxed and fun, because they were both in black boxes. London was a polished performance as befit the venue and Manchester was very cosy due the the venue size.
I'm sure in the future the more opulent occasions will occur, but you'll get a different kind of performance. People ask me why I go to all the shows, because the set list will be fairly similar, but I go because I know that each show will be particular to the venue and its mood.
I've only been to one show outside the UK and it was amazing how different it all was with a different type of audience. I'm told some of the European shows were amazing and I love to have time / money to experience this one day.
