In toronto, emilypoulain and i, as well as slymouse, waited after the show just standing at the stage. We talked to Thomas for a good half hour until Owen got there. And, like emily described above, it was super duper surreal. I don't even know how to describe it...

Well there's a good thing with english : you say "you" to your friend and your boss. You don't have the "you" for politeness we have in french (and they have in spanish and I don't know with other languages)... When I met my favorite french artist (the composer of Amelie soundtrack btw) I used that over-polite you while asking him something like "excuse me sir, may I have an autograph please ?" and his face was so WTF that I'm still ashamed of myself today... Maybe I'll be more natural if I have the chance to see Owen Anyway I'm glad you could meet Owen. Must have been great ^^

Must have been great ^^ I was quite expert at passive forms and other tricks to avoid using "vous" or "tu" for a while. And it is sometime still useful to let person I'm talking to decide which one to use. Anyway if you get to meet Owen, this is at least one thing you want have to worry about.

If I meet him and I decide to speak to him in french, I should use "tu" rather than "vous"? (i'm not a native french speaker)

Well, "vous" is the polite way of saying "you". It's a sign of respect while "tu" is the acquaintance "you". Personally, I would use "vous", but that's only because I am too polite/shy.

A 20-something Frenchwoman told me to stop using vous: "je ne suis pas assez vielle que cela" or something along those lines. I rely on "vous" a lot like Anthony, but if there's not much of an age difference between us (say, 15 years?), and there's a tiny bit of a relationship formed, I would use "tu." Using Owen as an example, I would very, very, very hesitantly use "tu."

I personnally find it weird when someone says "vous". I think she said "je ne suis pas si vieille que ça", that's what I keep saying (I'm 20 ). Yeah Buck you should say "tu". Yann really looked shocked that I said "vous" and "monsieur" (I don't know which one was worse). The other said "tu" and "Yann". awwww and sorry to bring Yann Tiersen and french here... (it's a bit off-topic)

I always use "vous" when talking to someone I don't know I meet for the first time. Except for people my age, or who don't have a huge age difference with me. Because I don't personnally know the person I'm talking to, and it's a sign of respect. Although I get confused. When speaking to my violin teacher I used to mix vous and tu because he was my teacher and at the same time he was like a friend. I'm so glad english is just "you" XD. I can't imagine talking to Owen in French, I said "naaah!" when he asked me to XD.

The older you get and the less hesitantly you are at using "tu". I know mainly "use" vous only for very formal and distant conversation. So I would say "tu" to most of the musicians I listen to if I get to meet them.

Irish sounds like you're trying to speak Russian after going to a really vicious dentist.

Irish sounds like you're trying to speak Russian after going to a really vicious dentist. This is true. Don't try and romanticise Irish, or we'll spout gibberish and pretend it's poetry.

well, this is quite a late reply, but i had to revive this thread with my experience... yesterday i was in porto for owen's concert with 2 of my friends: none of them as crazy about owen as i am. well, the concert was at 10pm and the doors opened at 9pm. i was there at 9 to be the first one in, which i was... and owen was having a drink inside. only him, the bartenders, me and my 2 friends. i felt so awkward that i couldn't go to him and say something... and now in retrospective i totally regret it. while i was thing "omg omg omg omg omg should i go? what do i say? OMGOMGOMG" he grabed his glass of wine and went backstage, and i was alone with my friends in the room. then after the show i waited my the merch table and he didn't come. i totally regret it and if i ever see him again like this i WILL say something! even if it's the stupidest thing ever, godammit! another thing was that, during the show, he said "if someone has questions or wants to have a conversation, feel free to jump in!" and i wanted to jump in! but what does one say in those circumpstances?
