So I went to the Final Fantasy/Mountain Goat's show on Thursday, and I had this dream of meeting Owen and having a great conversation, blah blah blah; we'd end up becoming BFF's and commenting on each other's blogs. The problem is, I get overly excited (to the point where I can't really made coherent sentences), so I thought things would run more smoothly if I thought out why I might say. The best I got was, "Hey, nice show!" Very conducive of a lifetime of Christmas cards, no?
Over-praise ("OMG, YOU CHANGED MY LIFE!!! I LOVE YOU!!! YOU INSPIRE ME TO PLAY MY VIOLIN EVERY DAY!!!!!") is probably the worst thing can you do; it just embarrasses you and makes the receive extremely awkward. And I can't imagine his caring very much about all about how you wrote a paper in high school about the lyrics of one of his songs, plus you just sound juvenile. Maybe ask him how much he practices or some other bit of small-talk; but no--too boring.
So the question is, if any of you met Owen Pallett after a concert, or maybe just on the street, what would you say to him?
(Actually, I might make a small lament about how it's so hard to search for him on Google. He played a song that I think was called Interview, but when I do a search for "final fantasy interview," I just kept getting actual interviews with the creators of the newest Final Fantasy game.)

I did something similar, except on twitter. I was like "OMG OWEN I LOVE YOU I AM SO EXCITED TO SEE YOU ASDLIJADBSNFLKAIJD" on twitter, and then the morning after the show, he sent me this
and I cried and laughed.

Either that song or you'll find an interview of Simon Bookish by the creators of the newest Final Fantasy. Either way, you win.

I'm sure you'll find plenty of Pallett worship on these forums, and I'm not talking about the Heartland lyrics thread. Even if it does seem a bit juvenile, I'm sure most artists wouldn't mind having their ego stroked every now and then.
The first thing I ever said to Owen Pallett was "Sorry"; It was at a Dan Goldman performance and I was in his way. In my younger days I had the same problem with a lot of my favourite musicians. It's really hard to put in to words, on the spot no less, what kind of effect on you they have. I just find it easier to demonstrate my affection in other ways.

I can't deal with talking to people who have influenced me, it always ends up as one of those situations that will haunt me for years and years. My new solution is: Hide in a corner.
How have I gotten so cowardly?

I dont think you should be cowardly, but I think you're still quite cool Ren

I dunno. I have this "thing" about imposing on people, so I likely wouldn't get in Word One, and even if I did, it'd probably be something like "so, nice weather, eh?" It's a sickness.

Just don't do what I did - diss the band that followed him, tell him that I'm going to see him tomorrow because I'm going to Cardiff "anyway", and that I'd "pop in" to the gig... Traumatising. I think if I had the possibility of not turning into a scared child if I met him again, I would just congratulate him on a good gig, thank him for playing <insert song here>, and ask him something interesting - "Who's F.A.S. in Spell for a Weak Heart?" for example. Oh well. If I were able to be that relaxed, it would only be because meeting him wouldn't mean as much.

^^ F. A. S. = foetal alcohol syndrome.
One of the reasons that I post so openly and non-anonymously on this message board (and others) is an effort to defuse any cult-of-personality symptoms that may arise out of music-making. This sounds presumptuous, esp. from somebody as comparatively unknown as myself... but it comes from a long-standing relationship with the internet that I've maintained since I was 10. When I was younger, posting on BBS's and the message boards therein was an act of tacit camaraderie, and as the 00s have progressed into a Total Clusterfuck Of Anonymous Trashtalk, I've done my best to stay present.
For much of my 20s I've dealt with many musicians who have capitalized on the 'otherness' of their personality; capitalizing on the mystique that a lack of access will engender. But far more inspiring to me are musicians who make themselves available, and to that end I've made an effort to be available to anyone.
The reason I'm bringing all this up: After a show, I'm happy to meet you, I love meeting people. Please, don't be shy. Feel free to ask me anything, even better, to volunteer information about yourself. I sometimes project an air of aloofness, or a patronizing sanctimony, but it's just my upbringing.
Also, don't be offended if I respond with a curt "thank you" and walk away, because there is often gear to load, wine to drink, friends and relatives to meet... other responsibilities in putting on a show.

yeeeeah, last time i talked to owen i decided that the best way to not act like a fanboy was to cut myself off. so i randomly blurted out "well, i'm going to cut this short because i'm really awkward!" mid-conversation, and then ran away to start drinking.

Thanks Owen! Brings a whole new irony to the song.
See you around!

So I'm home. I never got to really talk with you--Owen--you seemed busy on stage packing up and I was half expecting the band to be at the merch table afterwards... ..So um, if I were to have "met Owen Pallett after a concert, or maybe just on the street" and had gotten a chance to tell you more than how fantastic I thought the show was, It would be to let John know I'm terribly, terribly sorry about the mini-camcorder incident. I'm no Youtuber, just an inexperienced fan with poor concert etiquette... He hates me doesn't he? Really though, that was an amazing show. Going to Bristol?! Les Mouches (thank you by the way)?! I'm so glad I finally got to see what all the fuss has been about. Owen, you seem even more pleasant in person, I hope Portland treated you well this time around.
