No, Richie, I mean that it's literally perfect! (Cut to scene from "The Life Aquatic" with Klaus shouting to Ned "No! You're not understanding what I'm saying! I mean..." and then he stands up straight and salutes him.)
There is something of the petulant little boy to Owen's performance self (sorry to The Singer if he runs across this, but, well it is true...) and I remember that the first time I saw FF live, that's what drew me in so intensely. All that duality.

I could always post a copy for all the under 30's to load on their ipodphonething I might even convert to 7.1 as an experiment in over 50's foolishness, although not sure it will play on my phonograph.

I've always thought that "Horsetail Feathers" could have dropped right out of "Song Cycle."

I had never heard of Van Dyke Parks before, but Owen's cover of "Palm Desert" provoked me to hunt down the source material, and I could not have been more pleased. Song Cycle is such a weird and good album, I am ashamed mildly that it took me this long to hear of it. Overall, this recording of the show is simply divine. The orchestral arrangement of "Honour the Dead or Else" especially is wonderful. Even if the song never gets studio treatment, I can content myself with this version and the old shouty one. Also, for us young'uns, here's a downloadable mp3 conversion of the CBC recording: www.mediafire.com/?d4205mjegwz

Oh, agreed. I'm going through a big "Ultimatum" phase right now, and this is one of my favorite versions, so rich and chaotic, like a cake fight. EDIT: Man, this "Midnight Directives" is pretty damn gorgeous, too.

Agreed about Ultimatum. So far E is for Estranged would be top of my list though. It makes me want an orchestra.

So far E is for Estranged would be top of my list though. It makes me want an orchestra. Tell me about it. "Boys all want to be someone." That's so wounding. I kind of prefer the fm4 version (download it, if you haven't yet! The links are in the so-named thread...), just because it starts so tentatively and the solo performance really highlights the vulnerability of the lyrics. I can't (Goddamn) wait to hear how it sounds on the album, though. Three days!
