Tomlab artist Mantler (Chris A. Cummings) released the music video "Childman" from his forthcoming album Monody. He credits brass arrangement by Owen Pallett. take a seat, deep breath, have a watch/listen here, and let your worries disappear. Mantler - Childman

I was hoping to find the time to go see him on tour, but I'm snared in work at the moment and Birmingham continues to exist in another relative dimension musically.

Is his combover an ironic thing?

This is an old thread, but worth bringing out of the archives for the April 13th release date. I e-mailed Chris about ordering a copy direct, and he said that there will be two versions of the album, one general release for Tomlab and one limited edition with different cover art out of Blocks. Track listing is probably the same. The Tomlab website lists that OP did brass for two songs, though I don't know what the other is. Is his combover an ironic thing? www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGo5fS8EYDkI don't know about his hair, but there is no guile in this man's heart.

Hey kids, I'm a-comin' back to the UK in late May. Confirmed dates so far are: May 22-23 = COVENTRY (Belgrade Theatre/Tin Angel) May 24 = MANCHESTER (Nexus Arts Cafe) May 29 = CORK, Ireland (Crane Lane Theatre) May 30 = DUBLIN, Ireland (Odessa Club) June 1 = LEICESTER (Donkey Bar) June 2 = BRIGHTON (Fair Trade Gallery) June 3 = LONDON (Betsey Trotwood) More dates to be posted on my Myspace page: www.myspace.com/mantlerThe whole tour is co-headlining with Black Carrot. I'll be playing some solo songs and some with a 4-piece band. I've got a short haircut now. But the combover was not ironic. The other song which Owen Pallett wrote the horn arrangements for is called In Stride - you can hear it on my Myspace page. The album is also coming out on Tin Angel in late May in the UK. Hope that some of you can make it to the shows!!!! -Chris Cummings, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Chris, the promo picture that accompanies the Exclaim! review is incredibly cool.
I can't wait to hear the new songs! I'm holding back from listening to anything on the mySpace, letting the album keep some of its surprises, but my willpower is notoriously low. We'll see what happens by the end of the day...

Ah Chris, I had never heard your music before I read this thread (I'm ashamed, I know) but I do have to say that your music is absolutely fantastic!

Oh, God. It's so good. I don't know if my opinion has much sway, but it's really worth picking up a copy. (Blocks put out a really cool edition with cover art from Colin Bergh, the designer who did "Heartland" and accompanying schwag.) At least listen to it. I lovelovelove Steely Dan, and, really, that's not the first comparison I'd probably make, but it's something like it. It's a good nighttime-in-headphones album, and timeless in a really literal sense of that word: "without a time."
Mantler came out of nowhere on my musical radar, but I'm really happy it did. You can really tell that that Chris internalizes music, and manages to create something new-but-not-wholly-so out of it.
Damn. It's a great album.

I've heard most of the album now and I have to say, it's really, really good stuff. Kinda unlike anything else I listen to, but I'd definitely recommend it!
