Whilst I enjoy all the self penned tunes, I find the interpretation of the songs of other to be a constant source a bedazzlement. Paris 1919, Interview and Actors Revenge are all personal favorites (despite no official studio recordings).
..and so now we get 6 slices of Alex Lukashevsky to add to all the others.
Crush-Love-Crush is going to be a favorite just for its swirling orchestration and that fade at the end into the single chord ending. This is the 3rd variation of the song to compliment the live jazz blues version by DDU on Look At / Look Out and the acoustic folk guitar (complete with wobble board) version on Alex's myspace. I couldn't say any is better than the other as they are all great
The more melodic version of Nun Or A Bawd makes the comparison of the tune with a mountain song all the more obvious (But then I guess that's part of the songs endearing qualities). I'm going to favour the original over the new one simple because I love the off tone flourishes and everyone should own a copy of Ancient (although Look At / Look Out is also outstanding). Hey Owen...that's not to diss your version which is might fine (I think in my head I wrote that with a Tennessee accent for some reason only known to me)
I keep thinking At Last The 1948's B+W thriller when I hear Ultimatum (it's that dramatic string work). Mrs Black would be proud (I'm being obscure again with my references to pre python humour). I like this one more than the Fool e.p version if simply for the better whistling, although it was close with no dog !!
Moodring Band (from Zettel) was always such a smooth and calming number and just made for a fantasy cover.
You Saved a Junky Once by DDU is a pure avant garde masterpiece of distorted vocals and percussion backed with melody. I was interested in how this one would be done. I'm remarkably please how well it has scrubbed up and this doesn't do the original a disservice whilst being the most dramatically different to the original.
Oh you've all got a copy of Connexions by now so making a Horsetail Feather comparison now is pointless. The live French walk(run)about version was great, but this is better.
If this fine collection does nothing more than make people go and buy some DDU and Alex Lukashevsky, then it will be worth the effort.
Final thought...Big band works well
