Is this bad? Should I not be hoping to discuss a Canadian music prize on such an international board?
But it is a kind of tradition, almost!
So.
I am super-psyched the short list has been announced, and I totally want to hear what all of you people have to say.
Nominees for 2007/2008 are:
Black Mountain - In the Future
Basia Bulat - Oh My Darling
Plants and Animals - Parc Avenue
Stars - In Our Bedroom After the War
Caribou - Andorra
Shad - The Old Prince
Kathleen Edwards - Asking For Flowers
Two Hours Traffic - Little Jabs
Holy Fuck - LP
The Weakerthans - Reunion Tour
My take:
I am pretty excited to see Basia Bulat and HOLY FUCK on there! And Caribou! If I got to pick the winner, though, it would be "Parc Avenue" by Plants and Animals. I highly, highly recommend it.
(On the other hand, I am not going to make any more comments about that, since it did not do Miracle Fortress any good last year, and I might still be sad about it.)
"Reunion Tour" is a really good album, that said (although not as good as "Left and Leaving"--what is?), and "Little Jabs" is truly Fun with a capital "F" and Black Mountain's album *rocks* (and I mean that both as an expression of awesomeness and pure hardcore-ness).
I don't really like that Stars' new album made it onto the final list (I think it sounds a bit too contrived and over-produced), and I (somewhat guiltily because the dude went to my school) haven't listened much to Shad's album, nor am I overly enthusiastic about what I've heard, but that could very well be because I am less-than-into hip-hop and rap. Kathleen Edwards' album is very catchy (check out "The Cheapest Key"--it's pretty bitchin'), and I certainly think it should beat out the Stars album, but upon re-listening it doesn't strike me as Polaris material.
Whoa! Syntax and parentheses are a challenge, apparently.
What do you people think?
