Owen Ballett (not sorry) sounds like it'd be interesting.
Also, happy birthday P-Unit.

Happy birthday! www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Kp5QHk92F4A beautiful, eloquent interview with Owen about his favourite album, Xiu Xiu's "A Promise", and other related tidbits (conducted in his home? by the looks of it). I see Carcassonne and Puerto Rico on the bookshelf!

hi guys, i was wondering if you could help me out with something. i was reading the lyrics to i am not afraid and i'm having trouble figuring something out. english is not my first language so it's not uncommon that i'd miss something very obvious, so i thought i'd ask for help! anyway it's this part: "And then when ze started to sing, nobody could've called them crazy" and the thing i'm not sure about is who "they" is referring to. the way i read it it's the same person as "ze" but that would mean using two different sets of pronouns for the same person which as a nonbinary person i am not sure how to feel about that. hopefully there is something i am missing:) thanks for your help in advance!

As far as I can tell, "ze" and "them" are both referring to the same person in that sentence. My paltry guess is that it is referring to someone whose gender is unknown, rather than nonbinary. But I am neither very familiar with the word "ze" nor Owen's intentions in writing that song, so I'm probably not the best person to answer your question.

thanks! the only thing i was really asking for was help with my reading comprehension, so you did actually answer my question! well, the thing is, while singular they pronouns can definitely be used to refer to a person of unspecified gender, ze pronouns don't really work that way. they are only used to refer to a person who chose those pronouns specificly (that person doesn't neccessarily need to identify as nonbinary though). so using ze and they in the same sentence makes about as much sense as for example using she and they to refer to the same person. there are of course many people who use multiple diferent sets of pronouns and i'm sure there are some among them who wouldn't mind mixing them up and using diferent sets in the same sentence. so that's one possible explanation!

This entire album, you will notice, has a lot of gender-play. (It's called "In Conflict", duh.) Within "I Am Not Afraid", "ze", "they" and "them" all refer to the same gender-nonspecific person. I did not want the aggressive statement of "I'll never have any children" to be ascribed upon a specific gender. I deliberately kept the aggressive sentiments of this song spread out over a variety of voices; self, other, various gender states. Seeing as the last album dealt heavily with author/subject binary, I wanted to immediately establish that these definitions within "In Conflict" are more fluid.

thanks for your answer! i really appreciate the explanation and i really like not ascribing not wanting children upon any specific gender:) but still, i hate to keep pushing this, but ze is NOT a gender-nonspecific pronoun. ze and they can both be personal pronouns, but they is the only one that can also be used as a gender-nonspecific pronoun that's applicable to anyone. you will sometimes run across people using ze in this way as well, but to be honest it's mostly ignorant cis people doing that! generally ze should be used to refer to people who chose it as their personal pronoun, and not people of unspecified gender or people whose gender/personal pronouns you don't know or don't want to disclose.

The inspiration for this song is a gender-nonspecific person who uses "ze", "they" and "their" interchangeably. I have a non-essentialist view on this matter, which is to say, I will not call anybody anything they do not wish to be called.
