Hmm does Owen only sing on Cliquot?
I just listened to the entire album and felt he sung on another track and I just wasn't paying full attention.

Actually, I think the song should be a single.
Perhaps people who haven't heard of Owen might skip it impulsively because they're uncomfortable with another voice, but I think it's one of the very best on the album. Excellent, excellent melody on there, Owen. Zach's backing vocals really give it a lot of color and stay in the background in the most perfect way. The mixing on this record is great!

this album is sounding great. the string arrangements are especially standing out. nice work owen! I wanted to give it a few listens before commenting, but your right the arrangements do stand out. The whole album feels much smoother and lighter than Gulag Orkestar and that French chanson feel come across to good effect. A Sunday Smile caught my attention as it felt very familiar and then I remember that the sound is very similar to the Vlada series done by the Stranglers although obvious with lyrical content rather than spoke word. Cliquot is wonderful and proves once and for all that Owen does have a voice (despite his constant objections) although I wouldn’t want to say one track is better then the rest. It's an album that flows and is always pleasing on the ear. I love the switches from the jazz shuffle of In the Mausoleum to the soft piano of Un Dernier Verre (Pour la Route), the swirling Cherbourg and then the plaintive chants at the beginning of St. Apollonia. It is restrained (as Karpe points out) but not in a way that stiffles the music, but I think it's allowed to breath. so in conclusion as always I know nothing

Right now I'm going to give it a big "it will grow on me" badge. But it is good.
I'll add that I also think the arrangements stand out on this one. It's growing already. Une derniere verre (pour la route) is very nice, as is La Banlieu.

Right now I'm going to give it a big "it will grow on me" badge. But it is good. That's how I felt, but I felt compelled, and for good reason, to play it again once it was over. Nantes, Cliquot, The Penalty, Cherbourg, and St. Apollonia are the tracks that strike me.

Nantes has hold of me now. And still La Banlieu, Cliquot (Owen's vocals are very nice), The Flying Club Cup, Cherbourg.
So yeah, it's grown.

It's great. I'm loving the string arrangements.
Actually, I've been thinking that there is going to have to be someone to do for woodwinds what Zach Condon has done for brass and Owen has done for strings. Wouldn't it be awesome? Clarinet choirs instead of synthesizers? Harmoniemusik in place of harmonicas? Rippin' bassoon solos instead of guitar solos?
I'd be all over that.
(I'm only sort of kidding.)

Glad you liked it sorry I fucked up the lyrics It's not a cover it's a co-write. Zach wrote an instrumental and gave it to me and I wrote the melody and lyrics. I haven't heard the finished version and didn't even know it was called Cliquot until I read this post Given that Zach's voice is "the gold" of Beirut I'm pretty sure this track will be the one that people rush for the skip button Which would be an OK thing------> testament to the level of quality of Flying Club Cup, methinks and Beirut in general (best band) I have to say that Cliquot is one of my favourite songs on the album, although they are all my favourite, I certainly never skip over it and I think the vocals are beautiful and really fit the song. The album is one of the best I have heard this year, and indeed in a long time. It is so good to have such wonderful musicians in our time and also having you all collaborate with each other and work together to produce musical masterpieces.

I think if we're mentioning Beirut and Grizzly Bear it's only fair (er...for no particular reason other than I found it amusing) to add this: youtube.com/watch?v=4SYlLxXX7zw
