Oh now that was a pleasant surprise this morning as I waited for bicycle repair man to fix my boiler and Esopus get delivered.
Nice track full of acoustic drama.
The brochure says: "Currently at work on the album, Heartland, that documents the story of two 14th century kingdoms, Final Fantasy's Owen Pallett decided to create a medieval "spam equivalent." His song represents a leaflet distributed as part of an aggressive recruitment campaign by one of the kingdoms, Spectrum, to lure manpower from its neighbor Aurelia. As Pallett explains, "The language of the leaflet is fairly base and sensationalistic, and its exaggerated promises and fantastical descriptions are meant to prey on recipients in their weakest moments, so it offers much of the same strategic persuasion as modern-day email spam".
Mr Pallett added: Congratulations you have won this months lottery. To claim you prize please send an email his secretary with all you bank details to Losey.Money@openyourwallet.com ;D

I wouldn't say it's 'fox-hunting' music, but it's a damn good listen.

So, this exclusive track won't be found on any albums or EPs or anything. But, I must confess, the version you're hearing is unmixed! Which is why you might find it to be a little lacking in "electricity".
Me and Dave Newfeld recorded it together but Dave was super busy with recording Los Campansinos and moving the Stars and Sons studio to a new location. So we didn't get a mix done before the deadline. But it still sounded OK! And Tod Lippy (Esopus editor) liked it! So there it is!
A properly mixed version might appear some day, but not today.

Is it weird to released unmixed tracks? I guess it's like releasing raw footage and calling it a movie. Gauche! Also, Beirut are the nicest bunch of people! We like all the same things and dislike all the same things. So we say a lot of "I know, right?"

Hey, a bunch of raw footage can be good if it's good footage! And it *was* good footage.
Also, how many times can one use the word 'footage' in a post before it starts looking/sounding funny. Footage. Feetage.

I am still (im)patiently awaiting the delivery of my issue. I have to physically restrain myself from listening to it on esopus or hype machine. The brochure makes it sound excellent; I like that it's connected to Heartland. Needless to say, I am excited for what 2007 will bring in the realm of FF.

Unmixed?
It's hard to notice (though at first the sound of the track threw me for a loop, so I guess that's it).
It sounds good. It's like raw footage to movie only if the movie is like a documentary free of cuts about the events of sixty minutes. If that makes any sense?
whatever.
it sounds good, and we're ALL fine with that.
If you didn't tell us, we wouldn't know...

Well there you go, it's a rough diamond and worth it's weight in shreddries.
I've never really got the hang of this mixing thing, I always assumed you just twiddled a few knobs and then hey presto the magic people trample on all the duff bits and pack all the good bits with insulation so as to keep them safe.
I'm still grappling with some of the lyrics, but I get the gist of what it's all about and it conjures up appropraite images that make me consider a new start and sail today for the heartland (yeah like how corny am I being now......)
I do hope Owen's mental map of Spectrum and Aurelia is going to be as fully formed as middle earth was to JRT (Okay that might be a bit obsessive). We'll be waiting for each track to find out how it's all going. At this point in time it's difficult to make out if we should be taking sides and cheering!!
In the words of the immortal Captain..... Spectrum is Green
