The $5 show at the Harbourfront Centre on February 1st (in Toronto) is NOT A SHOW.
NO SHOW. THERE WILL BE NO MUSIC.
It is a conversation about Blocks Recording Club and music in general. The talk will be conducted by Carl Wilson (www.zoilus.com, and Blocks/Final Fantasy's most eloquent commentator).
Steven Kado is also part of the talk. Steve is the singer/bassist for the bands The Blankket and The Barcelona Pavilion. He is a current member of Ninja High School and Internet, and a former member of Lenin I Shumov, Jon-Rae And The River, The Hidden Cameras, Germans, Napkin, Jean Seberg and more.
He is the founder of Blocks Recording Club, and current serves as President of our Board of Directors. He is also my former roommate, my best friend and the only reason why I am not still playing weddings and writing bad opera.
So:
STEVEN K. KADO and M. OWEN PALLETT IN CONVERSATION with journalist CARL WILSON (Zoilus, The Globe and Mail, The New York Times, Blender, Slate, more)
February 1st, The Brigantine Room, $5, 8pm.

That sounds nifty.
I hope a few local folk from here go and review all the witty little intricacies of the evening. Since I'll only be there in spirit. And you're probably not going to rake in any money from my spirit.

Oh that would be a great thing to attend. I love the blocks way and keep dipping in to try stuff out. I went to a conversation show with John Burnel (The Stranglers) a while back and it was well worth the money. I can imagine that you would get quiet enthusiastic.
For those who are stuck in church in London, can someone make a recording. Love to hear the chat.

Ah that sounds great. Don't think it's possible for me to go either, so yeah, recording would be well appreciated.

"Writing bad opera"? Was that ever an option? It sounds entertaining.

So, after all my "Toronto, please"-ing, I can't make it. Who schedules stuff for Thursdays? I mean, come on now. I even checked trains to get there, and the one that leaves almost directly after my last class doesn't get to TO until 8:30.
All this to say, "Someone make a recording, please!"
(Writing bad opera DOES sound entertaining, now that you mention it. Although, it's possible there's a good deal of it out there already...*no comment*)

So. Question.
Is Carl Wilson on crack, because he says "I think the artists will play a tune or two as well." False hopes? Or a surprise for the fortunate few who are there?

I, also, would like to request a recording. I want that in my life.

Further Updates: "Speaking of Final Fantasy, an update on the following (Thurs.) night's show at Harbourfront, "View Points: Inside the Musician's Studio," with Owen P., Blocks' Recording Club/Barcelona Pavilion/The Blankket honcho Steve Kado, and yers truly, Zoilus: Contrary to some previous misinformation, including mine, Steve and Owen aren't going to be doing any live music that evening. I tried to convince them to turn the show into a performance by their duo, Internet, in which they act out RPG fantasies while screaming. But to no avail. Instead, we'll just be having a conversation, with each other and the audience, about why they make music and records the way they do - with a little three-way iPod battling to lively up the joint. I may press Owen to explain his theory that you can tell whether a musician is an asshole by the way he or she records drum sounds, or Steve to explain why it's a bad decision to try and make a living from your art. We will preview the newest Blocks releases. We will not talk about the Polaris Prize. We may talk about the Art Bears. There will probably be fighting, and Steve's sure to insult someone in the audience - maybe you!" (from zoilus.com)

I thoroughly enjoyed this evening. Entertaining! Intellectually stimulating! Steve Kado and Owen Pallett are two very intelligent fellows... though Steve was a little overbearing, shall we say, he was still a joy to listen to. Idea explosions! I loved the dynamic between the two of them, and the moments of blatant personality clash. I'm sure lots of people are gonna rail on Steve for his somewhat abrasively strong opinions and "pretentiousness", not to mention his hogging the mic, but oh well. The event, as a whole - so interesting. Immensely enjoyable. Though I do wish we got to hear Owen talk a little more. P.S. Anyone know what Chopin song it was that Owen gave us a taste of? My mind was blown.
