The Echo Songwriting Prize

After the Polaris shortlist, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise to any of us that Owen is up for yet ANOTHER Canadian prizey-thingy. The 'Echo Songwriting Prize' is presented by SOCAN "to identify what’s next and what’s best in current independent music. The prize honours some of the most innovative, creative and artistic songs created in the past year by emerging songwriters in Canada."

The nominees are:
-Laura Barrett, Deception Island Optimists Club (written by Laura Barrett)

-Final Fantasy, This Lamb Sells Condos (by Owen Pallett)

-Propagandhi, A Speculative Fiction (by Chris Hannah, Todd Kowalski, Jordan Samolesky)

-The Stills, Destroyer (by Olivier Corbeil, Timothy Fletcher, David Hamelin and Liam O’Neil)

-Wolf Parade, You Are a Runner and I Am My Father’s Son (by Daniel Boeckner, Hadji Bakara and Arlen Thompson)

And what's more, we get to vote in this one!

owen is gonna win this one by a landslide

This is a tricky competition because the winner will not be judged based on how good the song is, but by how many of their fans vote for them.

In other words, Laura's song could be the best of the bunch (and it probably is) but she likely won't win because she hasn't opened for Arcade Fire or got Vice Records on their side.

I hope that anybody and everybody who reads this board will take the time to vote on their favourite song of the five, but please, don't just do it to "support your man".

Ech, I'm a growing fan of both Laura Barrett and Wolf Parade... it hurts to vote.

It really isn't a terribly smart premise for a competition. Those with a following will probably gain a bigger following.

(Incidentally, is that photo that everyone seems to use for FF airbrushed? It doesn't really look right.)

I thought the same thing!

I have the original prints for that shoot, and when I first saw the "official" one blown up and printed, I said, "Somebody airbrushed this. I look like I'm made of silicon."

But nobody has owned up to it. The possible culprits are Davida (the photographer) or Jan (Tomlab's graphic designer). But last time I talked to Jan, he was *adding* frown lines to my face, not airbrushing them away.

Anyway, I don't have a proper copy of the original version so we have android Owen instead.

I actually love three of those musicians, like one, and dislike one (I won't say who's who, though). But still, honestly, even if I was posting on someone else's message board instead of FF's, I would still vote for FF. What can I say? I'm hopelessly addicted.

Just in case anyone was curious? Propaghandi won the five grand. And at the end of October, which confused me to no end since they said they'd announce the winner in mid-November.

For me, it was between Owen and Wolf Parade, but as it's Songwriting, Owen has to get the vote because he did it all himself, and they were three working together.
