I am thinking of taping one of Owen's gigs (Chicago maybe?) but have no equipment. Anyone have any tips (on the equipment to pick? Strategies?) I ask so I can best serve you all. Any help is appreciated...

i say a nifty mp3 player with voice recorder... and go right to the front and best best would be to ask if you could set it right beside oneof the speakers or by Owen *grin* of coarse its not super quality but it does the job ^_^

uhm, I'm sorry but that's complete nonsense! it's a general rule that the best recordings are made somewhere around the PA, which is far from the front.
also, mp3 players with voice recorders usually record at 96kbps or so, and hence are suited only to record voice (that's why they are called "mp3 player with voice recorder"...). recording music should be done at at least 128kbps for decent quality, but none of the recent mp3 players can handle that (well maybe the latest ipods with ipodlinux do). most bootlegs are recorded on minidisc, or as wav.
