I don't know if anyone here really knows anything about violins (except Owen, of course), but I'm looking into getting a violin. I'm just a poor high school kid looking for something pretty decent to get started on. I play guitar and bass (pretty well) already and have a strong foundation in music theory, and I want to pick up a more classical instrument, I guess.
Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on what kind of violin I could start on? I'd also want to eventually play it (however crappy I may be) live, so what should I do about a pickup?
I have a feeling that there aren't many actual violin players on here, but hey, it's worth a shot.

My ol' boy was provided by the borough and all I remember is how good he smelt.
Just don't get one of those ones that looks jaundiced.

my sister and father are violinists and ive tried to pick it up a few times and i was horrible. but then again im horrible at most string instuments. the harpsichord and glock are the instruments for me.
my point being that it was very hard for me to learn. you might be able to find a violin or viola class/lessons that would have an instrument for you to play, so you dont have to pay for one. ive come to find thats its best not to pay for an instrument you dont know too well because, in a few instances, i have bought them and then after much effort, i still cannot play. so im left with the instruments and they sit and collect dust.

Its not that hard to learn if you have already been playing guitar... when i started playing viola it just took a couple weeks to get used to bow techniques and stuff. As far as buying one goes I personally would want to spend over 1000 dollers.. canadian that is.. just go to your local music store and try some of them out. As far as playing live I use a soundcraft lavalier microphone (the little ones people wear on ties and stuff) and clip it on to the bridge(the wooden thingy the strongs rest on). If you want play through amps/pedals you might need to buy a converter, they cost about 30 dollers. Then providing you have amps, you have created an electric string instrument suitable for looping fun and heavy delay madness.
