Alright, so he's technically talented at the xylophones and drums, but NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR A SUNDAY MORNING PRACTICE SESSION WHEN THEY GO TO A SHOW.
I've never seen an opener drive away so many people in my life. Like I said, his skills are impressive, but why he thought he deserves his own slot is beyond me and everyone else at the Charlottesville venue last night.
Xiu Xiu was good, but not nearly as good as when I saw them at the Warehouse Next Door a couple years ago. The set is focused way too much on the slow songs.
Also: I apologize in advance. My friends were the assholes talking loudly during "Fast Car."

I rather enjoyed Congs For Brums at the show in Denver. Watching what that man does to percussion instruments was a highlight of the show for me and my roommate, and, from the overheard snippets of conversation, the people who were standing around me.
That said, there were a couple of teen girls standing at the front of the stage talking loudly through most of both sets, which left me feeling a little unsettled about xiu xiu's growing fanbase. Who the fuck pays ten dollars to go to a show and talk and text message through the entire performance, and why the fuck do they feel the need to vie for space with all the the seven-foot-tall amazon boys with afros, who apparantly also need to be stageside to enjoy the performance?
Off-topic, I know, but I deserve to rant once in a while.

i'm not a big percussion kind of guy, so i was lost before i saw the show, but i enjoyed what came from ches' sound, also the added percussion to the performance of xiu xiu makes for an entirely different show all together, i suppose its something that is made apparent after having seen xiu xiu live (unless your our friend on the post here) but i enjoyed it, especially 'muppet face'.
also, 'fast car' was interesting, and i didnt even like the cover, so i dont know what you're talking about.

i was also at that denver show, just to the right of those annoying teeny boppers. i was in total shock how, throughout ches' set, one of those girls was loudly chatting away on her cellphone. i thought it was well deserved when a friend of mine harshly told them to shut up or go to the back of the venue, and they were relatively quiet afterwards.
i'm so happy congs for brums has his own set on this tour. i'm totally excited by the fact that all of these youngins and hip kids are being exposed to a different kind of music whether they like it or not, impatiently waiting for xiu xiu to come on. personally, i found his set entirely exhilerating. those vibraphone pieces are gorgeous, and what the man does with a drum set and percussion are absolutely mind boggling. i couldn't take my eyes off of him. the music that he makes is a really important element to what makes xiu xiu the band that they are. a lot of the more interesting bands that are getting some fame these days and attracting these crowds are incorporating these free jazz and 20th century composer concepts into their music, so it's nice to see an artist who makes that kind of music specifically, and makes it very very well, playing in front of these bigger xiu xiu audiences.
and one of the things that makes xiu xiu one of the most important bands around is their incredible use of dynamics. the intensity of those quieter moments makes the louder moments all the more jarring. i was actually really happy to see the emphasis on these quieter moments in this set.
perhaps xiu xiu just isn't the band for you anymore?
eh.

Worst thread of my life.
I like the quiet Xiu Xiu songs best, they are more intense i find.
and if you don't like a band leave the venue till it's over don't stand around and run your lips like you matter.

dublave, i was standing directly behind those girls, beside the fella that asked them to shut it. I was the fat guy with facial hair and large gauge piercings with the little redheaded girl. Didn't realize someone else from the board lived in Denver

i loved ches' set. he's so talented and makes fantastic music. and i loved that xiu xiu brought thier own mix cd's to play in between sets. you could totally see those bitches were sooo out of their element and uncomfortable; because they're used to hearing fuckin death cab for cutie or some shit like that in between sets. all they could do was try and ignore it.

Having The Disintegration Loops on a mix cd for playing between sets is probably the greatest thing ever.
Huzah!
