Sooo I am awake at an internet Cafe in NYC right now. I saw XX last night at the Mercury lounge and it was soooooooo amazing. After like 3 years of obsessively checking shzine xiu xiu.org and listening to every piece of music JS and XX make on repeat seeing them live was sooooo surreal. AND NOW I GET TO SEE THEM AGAIN TONIGHT @ THE BOWERY BALLROOM
Here is a kind of play by play of the night with setlists (incomplete except for xiu xiu)
At around 8:30 there were like 5 people there. A kid slouched next to the stage and then like 2 couples falling asleep. They were playing 70's alt country music really loud (one song came on that was talking about a gay cowboy?) Barr came on and a few more people came in maybe like 20. He had some hilarious dialogue talking about the trippy passive agressive energy in the room. He was joking around with Caralee and David, and just being all around amazing!
Barr:
The B Side is Silent (new song which was incredible!) Lights Off The 2nd track off of his DBA album? The one that ends with the line that's like (whatever regenitive force of evil..and I think he says whatever nowness...)
Cong For Brums
I don't know what the piece was called. But this was sooo amazing as well. He gave all of the percussion instruments on stage a voice and his songs envoked incredible imagination..
Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog:
He played 4 or 5 songs. (Ches Drumming) Super experimental. Rock Heavy Drumming. One he said had been written by his accountant " the great gay S and M poet...." It was interesting and noise heavy very cool. There seemed too be alot of 40 something new york hipsters there to check this out. In the beginning of the set this big guy that looked like a football coach ran out into the audience and made everybody that was sittiing down stand up. I didn't pay as much attention to MRCD as I could've because I was super tired from not getting any sleep on my overnight flight, I was a little delirious and trying to conserve energy for xiu xiu.
XIU XIU
I was standing relatively close to the stage behind these two tall guys and in front of some DJ's who were talking about the projects they were working on and their upcoming CMJ showcases. The Dj's behind me were making fun of the tall kids and made some funny comments about xiu xiu as well.
They were like
"Tall people love Xiu Xiu"
One of the DJ's was trying to pump up their friend about the show saying
"Last time I saw them they had 4 vibrators making all of their percussion sound"
When Jamie came out he was like
"Is that the guy? It can't be? Unless the guy cut his hair and he's been working out"
They went on to talk about how buff and sexy Jamie is.
his friend was like "Is that the girl? Did she straighten her hair?"
It's funny because when Barr came out somebody was like "Hmmmm I thought he was fatter than that"
Apparantly New Yorkers are extremely image conscious..
after they set up Jamie, Caralee, and Ches did this huddle where it looked like they passed around a fake joint, popped some imaginary pills, and snorted air. I would like to know what that was about, an interesting pre-game ritual. The set was as follows...
(Happy Birthday to Ches) Buzz Saw H.F.E.C. Boy Soprano Hives P.J. in the Streets Bishop,CA Fox and the Rabbit Vulture Piano Muppet Face
Presumably they left out I love the valley and fast car, because the cliche heckler..a drunk girl kept singing loudly "It's a pill and you have to take it" after each of the last few songs. Then when the set was over she was like what's that song name? and somebody was like "I love the valley?" she yelled at Jamie "20$ if you play I love the valley" ....It was annoying but at the same time it didn't really detract from the show..I kind of expected that person to be their from reading all of the past show reviews.....
Anyway I was totally blown away!!! It is still sinking in. After the show I talked to David a little bit about Shakuhachi, and got a Super Bear Hug from Barr. I think he has magical powers or something because his legendary bear hugs are crazy! There was an Israeli Music Journalist their talking with David about Xiu Xiu for some story he was going to do on them....there was also a cameraman filming this show, so maybe their will be a DVD release?
The Merch:
The XX cat shirt. (Two hands holding a cat and xiu xiu is written in sankrittish font) The love handles Xiu Xiu shirt with the yellow line down the middle A t shirt with a print of Caralee eating something out of a bowl Cong for Brums Tss SEXY SEXY AMAZING David Horvitz prints / phot tour books For $2,000 the Limited edition La Foret 10" Airforce LP, Fleshettes, Devendra XX, DH LP, XX/Grouper LP Barr Single
Behind David there was an add hanging up that said "Be Gay" with a shirtless dude on it.
Sorry this was soo long. I had so much fun! Seriously awesome!

10/13/06 buzzsaw hello from eau claire boy soprano hives hives bunny gamer i love the valley, oh bishop, ca vulture piano the fox and the rabbit pj in the streets of london muppet face fast car new shirts: we clapped and clapped and stomped and stomped for an encore, but no dice. come on, wheres the i broke up encore? still, fucking excellent show and i was absolutely blown away by ches' drums, buzzsaw live, and the freakout harmonica during vulture piano. also of note: during pj in the streets of london jamie started the line "my royal name is cyrus the selfish" and of course a drunken audience member finished loudly during the silence with "MY NAME IS PANIC IN STREETS OF LONDON" to which jamie replaced the line with "how soon is now, sucker?"

it happened last year at the bowery, and this year everyone was stomping hardcore, but after the show we realized they probably couldnt do it because it was nearing 1:30 and it was late already.. oh well, next year.
