i have a bit of an odd question for this script i'm working on, and i figured maybe someone on this board could help.
when a band performs a show, how is the money handled? are they paid at the show? does the band handle the money, or does it go through the booking agent? if it goes through a radio station, is there any changes in the normal routine? does the radio station pay ahead of time? etc?
thanks for any help

I don't think there is a way it consistently happens unless a show is booked through an agency, or a radio station as a business has a protocol they follow for ethical reasons. Is this a script for the ESL class you teach? or are you writing a play? details.....

it's a play i started a while ago, but put away due to some personal issues i was having that were too closely related to some events in the play (weird, having your own art imitate your own life, rather than the other way around), but i recently broke it back out, and i've decided to take another crack at.
here's the basic situation in the script: the artist has a booking agent, and a girl sets up a show through her local college radio station. Any ideas how the money situation would be dealt with? it's kind of a minor logistical thing, but i don't want to make some major mistake that would cause any musicians to snicker

Is this like the indie version of the music man? From what i've heard, its mostly touch and go. Sometimes a band might solicit a demo and info kit to a concert, sometimes they might have an agent who does large scale bookings, and other sutff. Mostly though, the band does it themselves, unless they are going on tour, where they contact an agent who receives the money and take a cut.

I think anyway you write it will be okay, I heard a dirty story about a college group in Connecticut not being able to pay the Robot ate Me because they just made enough to pay xiu xiu....

ive played shows and booked shows without a label.
in those cases, the booker, whomever, gets $0 unless the label or band wants to thank you. if youre the artist playing independantly, then youre usually payed your percentage at the end of the night or whenever you leave.

It definitely depends on where you are playing.

the bands on clear channel are all much bigger than what i'm writing about
i'm talking about a band/solo artist with perhaps some internet notoriety and perhaps a small, devout following (on the level xiu xiu, maybe deerhoof, why?, broadcast, etc. - not CYHSY or the strokes), but not well known, and a show at a college, booked through the college radio station

i read your first post, and don't have any time to read the others, i got to run, so maybe they already answered this. normally i would write some nonsense, but since you want a pretty serious answer, here you go:
if its set up through a college the college pays the band, usually by check, way later after the show is done. the booking agent either books the show at the college, or the college requests the band through the booker, and then the booker sets it up. the booker gets some money. sometimes the college will pay the booker directly by mailing them a check. sometimes they will give the check to the band at the show. college shows are weird, they have to have all the paperwork down for tax purposes. wait, i don't even know if you are talking about a college. if its just a radio like kxlu i'm sure the band is just asked and then they play for free... b/c its like advertising or something... maybe there's money there, but i'm not sure.
colleges put up the big bucks too, just to let you know. like seriously, here's $5000 for some dude to come talk or some band to play. THAT IS WHY EVERYONE SHOULD GET ON THE BOARD, AND THEN EVERYONE GETS THEIR FRIENDS BANDS TO COME, AND SPLIT THE FUCKING MONEY. THINK SITUATIONIST PARIS PRE '68 - ALL THE CRAZY RADICAL STUDENTS TOOK CONTROL OF THE STUDENT BOARD AND THEN STARTED TO PUBLISH THESE RADICAL ZINES THAT WERE PRINTED ON RAINPROOF PAPER (HOLY FUCK!!!!!!) AND FULLY PAID FOR BY THE UNIVERSITY B/C THEY HAD THE POWER TO CHOOSE WHERE THE MONEY GOES FOR THE STUDENT BUDGET. FUCKKKKK!!!!!! SOMEONE GET ME TO COME TALK AT YOUR SCHOOL!!! I'LL TALK ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHY OR TOURING W/ XIU XIU OR ANYTHING, JUST GET ME THE BIG BUCKS. I'M SERIOUS.
i don't usually read this, so i may not read your response if you have any questions, but if you do, email me.

i'm back and i'm going to barf b/c of bad chinese food and a bad gin and tonic.
ok, so this doesn't apply to your scenario, but it could... lets say it was a venue on a campus, so its like a real club, and the college isn't paying. there are certain deals:
a gurantee is what you are guranteed to get paid. this sucks for small clubs like the smell in LA b/c then they have to pay what the gurantee is no matter what, even if they don't make it. it's good for bigger clubs like in hollywood and shit b/c FUCK THOSE CLUBS!!!
sometimes it will say after this much is made at the door, then the band will get X% of the rest. so then its the gurantee plus some extra money.
sometimes its just plain: x% of the door if its a smaller club.
but if its a real college show, the big bucks. in check. hassle paper work. usually people don't pay a door charge b/c its just a free event for students, "entertainment". sometimes when they do charge at the door (and it is a college show, and not just a club on campus) then its just the student club or student body or board making some extra cash....
