Ohhhh! Sorry I slept on it. Anyway It was new to me and I found it right after I picked up this old nonesuch explorer series record so I was really psyched about seeing that video.

can john cage really be brought into this conversation? the man totally poineered the way we listen to music long, long ago, and now a whole ton of stuff has happened since then. many of his compositions might seem silly or too simple now, but the fact is that people just really hadn't thought of those kinds of things as being musical back then. much like in all art, someone had to do it in order for us to get where we are now. yes, someone had to compose a piece of silence. it makes us realize that there's no such thing as silence. sitting there for four minutes and 33 seconds really actually listening, you're going to hear a lot of things. and that was the point. music based on ideas.
but two awesome musical dudes, two people we all know are capable of making some really interesting stuff, sitting around looking really serious as they jam on a toy flute, an ashtray, and glass bottles does not an interesting musical piece make. reading the french translation, it sounds as though the french dudes they were with kind of pressured them into it a little bit. but all the same, i agree that if i didn't like xiu xiu as much as i did, this video would only fuel that all the more.
