I'll download it when all the tracks get out, like I did with La Foret. But I bought La Foret (3 copies, and an addition LP), so I don't feel guilty.
Edit: yeah, that made me sound a bit cocky about it, but seriously, download the tracks, and then put a 5 in paypal (orders@xiuxiu.org) for xiu xiu. Its like paying for 1/4 of the album!

"you guys are treating jamie like shit."
no offense, but that's a little ridiculous, given that it's people like us, (i'm guessing most of the people here have all the albums, probably in multiple versions, and most have seen xiu xiu live plenty of times) that have made it possible for xiu xiu to be a career for jamie.
i don't have any problem with that, either. actually i think it's great. but i think for myself, and it's obvious to me that listening to these tracks is not going to hurt jamie or xiu xiu. as has been said many times before, the proliferation of mp3s across the internet has probably helped many people discover this band.
now maybe putting the mp3s up on soulseek isn't the best thing to do (and that's where i think you're right) at this point, but sharing them with people who are xiu xiu fanatics will hardly make any difference.
fundamentally, i don't think that artists really own their own work. it's fans that make a band what it is, and that make the music what it is, so i don't feel guitly to listening to these tracks.

I seriously don't think file-sharing is going to affect Xiu Xiu's sales. Xiu Xiu has a rabid cult following that will buy everything they release. I've never heard of a casual Xiu Xiu fan, they are very love em or hate em. Even when the full album leaks I will download and then buy the cd when it comes out. I think that's true for most fans. Not the mention the obsessive types who buy the album on every single format and frantically search for releases in different countries with different artworks.
Really, is there anyone here who ONLY has the Xiu Xiu albums on mp3?

From those 3, I love Boy Soprano and like Buzz Saw. I've also had the pleasure of hearing Hello from Eau Claire and Vulture Piano live when they played in Sydney, and I can say that Air Force is looking great

it's less of a money thing, more of a respect for release time, i know most if not all of you guys will buy stuff and probably buy more than the album (shirts, pins, records, etc). i guess i'm just old fashioned. whatever.

I just like hearing it all as a whole record. But I won't even download it when the whole record leaks, because I never really appreciate anything I hear on my shitty computer speakers. Waiting for the CD to come through the letterbox gives me something to look forward to in my boring world, even if it's months away.

When I moved to Australia from Sweden I sold all my CD's and bought an MP3 player. Since then I have only bought one or two CD's, and that's over two years ago. I am a huge fan, Xiu Xiu is one of the best bands I've ever heard, and I still refuse to 'own' them on shitty CD's. Vinyl is kool and all that, but when you're having a party or just fucking cleaning your room my $40 record player skips like a motherfucker. My computer's hooked up to the hi-fi, and I have all the music on there. Won't have to worry about scratched or lost discs, or even changing discs. I'll pay Xiu Xiu some of my hard earned money either when I'm rich (like that's ever gonna happen) or when they take the time to come over and play. If they play more than one shows I'll see them all... don't care what the ticket costs. Music as an abstract entity enprisoned in disposable matter and worst of all plastic, is a waste of time IMHO.
Yes, I would steal other stuff too, if I could. And no; I don't steal because I think I'm better than everyone else, just because I'm poor. I go behind supermarkets and get my food out of dumpsters for fuck's sake.

...i "appropriated" the books on my shelves, the furniture i'm sitting on, and the food i'm eating...i "appropriated" the monitor i'm looking at, the jeans i'm wearing, even the ipod i'm listening to...i have no interest in owning media, lining my shelves with cds which collect dust and guilt and become inanimate oppressors. i gave away 3000 cds when i moved to denver (a move i paid for by redisrobuting goods that were appropriated) and it was one of the most freeing actiona i have performed...i prefer to support art on a personal level...i drag at least 3 people who have never heard an artist to a show...i always purchase merch from every band on the bill, and i usually give that merch away. i will probably download this record and not buy it, but i will pay the cost of this small betrayal ten times over when xiu xiu come to play here in september.
