im assuming theres been a lot of posts about each individual song and its meaning, but i was wondering what everyone thought of every song, or if they have a set idea already of what a song is about, we all believe certain songs are about certain things, but i guess this is just so everyone can discuss whichever song is that comes up in their head and what its about, perhaps this threat could be stapled at a later date and time to keep things simple

i think individual threads about different songs are more appropriate... i don't want too many stickies at the top of the forum, and a single thread about song meanings would probably get out of hand... if you want to discuss a particular song, but want to know if it's ben discussed before, do a search... or start a new thread
of course, that's just my thoughts... if everyone else likes this idea, just start using the thread as suggested, and i'll delete this comment and make it a sticky

there's a site for it: www.songmeanings.net/artist.php?aid=16764if you want to base your opinions on others opinions before starting discussions here. i personally would like to talk about some lyrics in the songs...

debating the lyrics is just more beating around the bush of this vast xiu xiu topiary. it's like playing at political correctness, being cute and coy when the real sweetspot of our discussion bubbles blatantly above the surface. the elephant in the room. yeah, that one--and when you pull the elephant's tail, it's trunk extends and a flag drapes down. printed on it is the vital question, the reason we congregate here, the truth we disguise in 'lyrics' and 'live shows' and 'bootlegs' and 'etc.'
you know what it says. but i'll say it again, for clarity--it says:
"is jamie gay?"
that's it. the center of this universe. one question in seven thousand outfits.
and it's a trick question.

hes right in some respect by saying (though pointlessly metaphorized) that sexuality is an important part of the "meaning" of xiu xiu, but thats definitely not all its about. who cares if jamies gay? it makes the music more attractive to myself because i am of the homosexual persuasion, partly because a good portion of the lyrics make such vivid reference to the subculture, but i also am a huge (and bigger) fan of like, billy corgan, or thom yorke and neither of them are gay, as far as i have learned.

not to be a dick but...
sexuality is not a "meaning" (not really a useful word in the analysis of any work of art) nor is it really even a theme. most accurately, it is a subject.
sorry but i hate trivializing works of art with the word "meaning"--it "means" what it is and vice versa.

Sorry to be a dick as well, but art never is. Like any form of communication it simply uses pictures (or words) that represent a fact or a configuration of circumstances truly or not, thus only means.
edit: Did I interpret your last sentence incorrectly? I'm not so sure anymore.

There's already a place to rabbit on about what things are supposed to mean. Some of these conspiracy theories are very entertaining: www.songmeanings.net/artist.php?aid=16764I don't tend to favor deconstructing and over analysing things, myself. It kinda kills the mystique.

isn't the "meaning" of a song individual to the listener? yes, sexuality would be a subject, and self-loathing, for example, would be a theme... but to decide what the song actually means, it's up to the individual listener to piece everything together with their own experiences to ultimately discover what the song means to them... hell, jamie doesn't even tell us what he thinks the songs mean... he may tell us (or interviewers) the situation that inspired the song, but the final evaluation/interpretation is left up to the listener
